Influence of occlusal vertical dimension on cervical spine mobility in sports subjects
Introduction: In the scientific literature, a number of studies have reported conflicting results regarding the effects of occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) on sports-related skills. The purpose of this study was to increase OVD in sports subjects so as to specifically investigate the influence on cervical spine mobility. In particular, we measured cervical range of motion (ROM) before and after increasing OVD in individuals, either with or without malocclusion, analyzing both sports and sedentary subjects. Materials and methods: Participants were divided into two groups: a sports group (SG) and a control group (CG), each including 18 subjects. The SG was composed of sports subjects (age: 2…
68 O - Maintenance low-dose (LD) oral idarubicin (oIDA) in elderly patients (pts) with acute myelogeneous leukemia (AML)
IDA by i.v. route. especially in combination with cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C). proved quite effective for intensive chemotherapy of AML However, persisting controversies on aggressive/intensive versus “ottenvated” regimens for elderly AML pts emphasize the interest of olDA in this latter setting (ct M.R. Howard et al and M.J. Keating. Clin. Drug Invest. 1995; 9. Suppl. 2: 16–38) A 69% complete response (CR) rate was recentty reported (F. Leoni et al Br. J. Hoematol 1995; 90: 169–174) among 25 elderly AML pts (> 60 yrs old) with an “attenuated” dose of IDA, i.e. 8 mg/m2 i.v. d, 1. 3, and 5. plus Ara-C 200 mg/m2 by continuous i.v. infusion (ClV) d, 1–7, and etoposide (VP-16) 60 mg/m2 i.v. d,…

Effects of tinnitus on postural control and stabilization: A pilot study
Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the tinnitus's impacts on postural control. Material and methods: Sixty-six subjects (age: 46,71 ± 15,12 years, height 166,32 ± 8,88 cm, weight 64,85 ± 12,57 kg) with idiopathic tinnitus were recruited for the study and were tested. Each subject underwent to ‘Romberg test’, ‘Static balance’ and ‘posture analysis’. Static balance and posture analysis were performed two times, with open and close eyes, and were measured through the FreeMed posturography system. Results: showed that subjects had worse Baropodometric performances respect to benchmarks; moreover according to literature the results show that these patients had significant differ…
A fitness index model for Italian adolescents living in Southern Italy. The ASSO project
BACKGROUND: Strong relations between physical fitness and health in adolescents have been established in the last decades. The main objectives of the present investigation were to assess major physical fitness components in a sample of Italian school adolescents, comparing them with international data, and providing a Fitness Index model derived from percentile cut-off values of five considered physical fitness components. METHODS: A total of 644 school pupils (15.91.1 years; M: N.=399; F: N.=245) were tested using the ASSO-Fitness Test Battery (FTB), a tool developed within the Adolescents and Surveillance System for the Obesity prevention project, which included the handgrip, standing br…
REPORT OF A CASE OF MALIGNANT TUMOR-LIKE GASTRIC LESION BY CANDIDA IN A DIABETIC TREATED WITH CYCLOSPORINE FOR PSORIASIS AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE
Mycotic infection of the alimentary canal are rare and usually involve the upper digestive tract. Mycetes, especially of Candida family, are habitual saprophytes in the digestive tract of healthy individuals. Under certain conditions, fungal flora may overgrowth, resulting in lesions of the digestive mucosa, which, rarely, might evolve to local diffusion and/or systemic lympho-hematogenous spreading. In the stomach, sometimes, mycotic infections may appear like benign gastric ulcers. we described a case of woman, aged 64, affected by psoriasis, in chronic treatment with cyclosporine and type 2 diabetes mellitus, a well-known immunosoppressive condition, with endoscopic evidence of ulcerated…
