A number of variables predicting the success or failure in learning to read has been presented in the literature. Investigations, however, aiming to evaluate the impact of these factors in multivariate models are rare, particularly in French, and do not take into account participants' individual and social characteristics. In this perspective, a longitudinal study, comprising 199 students, was realised from kindergarten through first grade. The results show that, among all the variables studied, the naming of consonants and vowels in kindergartens is the best predictor of ackowledging both decoding letters and written comprehension at the end of the first grade.
