Enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography of the choroid in idiopathic macular hole: A cross-sectional prospective study.

Purpose To determine the choroidal thickness in the macular area in patients with idiopathic macular hole in one eye and an unaffected fellow eye and in healthy controls. Design Cross-sectional, prospective study. Methods Twenty-two patients with a full-thickness unilateral idiopathic macular hole and 22 age- and sex-matched controls were recruited. Enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography images were obtained by using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. The choroidal thickness was measured in the subfoveal area and 1000 μm and 2000 μm away from the fovea in the nasal and temporal regions. The diameter of the macular hole and the axial length were determined. Results Ch…

Toxic adenoma and papillary thyroid carcinoma in a patient with Graves' disease.

A case of a very rare association of toxic adenoma and papillary carcinoma with Graves’ disease is presented. A 34-year-old woman developed Graves’ disease with mild ophthalmopathy. An ultrasound revealed diffuse thyroid enlargement with a hypoechoic pattern and a hypoechoic nodule with regular edges of 1.6 cm in diameter at the lower pole of the left lobe. A thyroid 131I scintiscan showed a diffuse and homogeneous 131I distribution. The 131I uptake (RAIU) was elevated. One year later, while still on a low dose of methimazole, the patient had a recurrence of hyperthyroidism following an iodine load from a contrast agent. A further thyroid ultrasound confirmed the previously described patter…

Study of pituitary secretion in relation to retinopathy in patients with juvenile diabetes mellitus.

Fifteen juvenile diabetic patients with normal eye fundus, 6 with non proliferative retinopathy, 5 with proliferative retinopathy and 5 healthy control subjects were studied in order to investigate pituitary function in relation to diabetic retinopathy. ACTH values at 08(00) and 18(00), hPRL and TSh secretion in response to 200 microgram TRH i.v., and GH secretion in response to 500 mg oral L-dopa were evaluated. In all diabetic subjects, 08(00) ACTH levels were lower than in controls. Basal hPRL, TSH and GH values of the diabetics did not differ from those of the controls. No significant differences were found in hPRL levels in response to TRH, whereas significantly lower TSH responses wer…

Multiple hormonal and metabolic deficiency syndrome in chronic heart failure: rationale, design, and demographic characteristics of the T.O.S.CA. Registry.

Recent evidence supports the concept that progression of chronic heart failure (CHF) depends upon an imbalance of catabolic forces over the anabolic drive. In this regard, multiple hormonal deficiency syndrome (MHDS) significantly has impacts upon CHF progression, and is associated with a worse clinical status and increased mortality. The T.O.S.CA. (Trattamento Ormonale nello Scompenso CArdiaco; Hormone Therapy in Heart Failure) Registry (clinicaltrial.gov = NCT02335801) tests the hypothesis that anabolic deficiencies reduce survival in a large population of mild-to-moderate CHF patients. The T.O.S.CA. Registry is a prospective multicenter observational study coordinated by “Federico II” Un…

A Comparative Analysis of Copy Number Variation of the Sheep and Goat Genomes

Recent studies have shown that copy number variants (CNVs) are important sources of variability of mammalian genomes. We applied a cross species array comparative genome hybridization (aCGH) experiment using as reference the cattle genome to investigate, for the first time, variability in the sheep and goat genomes derived from copy number variation and identified 431 and 358 CNVs, respectively. A comparison of these results to those obtained in other mammals for similar experiments is reported. The identified CNVs could be important in determining phenotypic and production differences between and within breeds. Further studies will be carried out to evaluate the identified CNVs from both f…

Circulating endothelin-1 levels in type 2 diabetic patients with ischaemic heart disease.

To investigate whether circulating endothelin-1 (Et-1) may be related to the increased incidence and severity of ischaemic heart disease in type 2 diabetes mellitus, we compared the concentrations in type 2 diabetic patients and in non-diabetic patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) angiographically documented. Plasma levels of Et-1 were determined in 34 type 2 diabetic patients with CAD (16 with stable angina, 6 with unstable angina, 12 with previous myocardial infarction) and in 19 nondiabetic patients with CAD (4 with stable angina, 5 with unstable angina, 10 with previous myocardial infarction). Fifteen diabetic patients without CAD and 9 healthy volunteers served as control subjec…

The effects of muscular exercise on glucose, free fatty acids, alanine and lactate in type I diabetic subjects in relation to metabolic control.

Metabolic effects of muscular exercise were studied in eleven subjects with type I diabetes mellitus during poor metabolic control, and again during good metabolic control, and in ten healthy control subjects. All the subjects were submitted to a submaximal gradual triangular test on an electrically braked bicycle ergometer; glucose, FFA, alanine and lactate were measured at rest, and after exercise. In poorly controlled patients, glucose and FFA were unchanged after exercise, whereas blood alanine and lactate increased by a percentage similar to that of the controls, and well-controlled diabetic patients. Baseline alanine concentrations were lower and lactate concentrations higher than in …

Cardiac changes in subclinical and overt hyperthyroid women: retrospective study

This retrospective and descriptive 4-year study was undertaken to describe cardiac changes in subclinical and overt hyperthyroidism. We revised the charts of 386 consecutive cardiopathic women whose blood samples were referred to the Radioimmunoassay Laboratory to evaluate thyroid function from 1 January 1997 through 31 December 2000.After excluding women because euthyroid or hypothyroid, or taking amiodarone and women with hypertension, rheumatic disease, myocardial infarction, a total of 31 hyperthyroid women were thus selected for the study: 19 with subclinical hyperthyroidism and 12 with overt hyperthyroidism. The prevalence of atrial fibrillation did not differ between subclinical (48%)…

Thromboelastographic profiles as a tool for thrombotic risk in digestive tract cancer

Background: Quantification of the magnitude of thrombotic risk associated with malignancy and with anti-cancer therapy is indispensable to use anticoagulant drugs which selectively interfere with haemostatic mechanisms protecting patients from venous thromboembolism (VTE) and probably from tumor progression. However, none of activation coagulation markers has any predictive value for the occurrence of the thrombotic events in one individual patient. Current clotting methods can’t reveal the overall dynamic clot formation; in contrast thromboelastographic methods specifically assess overall coagulation kinetics and its strength in whole blood. Aim: Objective of study was to evaluate if the a…

Measurement of the atmospheric muon flux with a 4 GeV threshold in the ANTARES neutrino telescope

A new method for the measurement of the muon flux in the deep-sea ANTARES neutrino telescope and its dependence on the depth is presented. The method is based on the observation of coincidence signals in adjacent storeys of the detector. This yields an energy threshold of about 4 GeV. The main sources of optical background are the decay of 40K and the bioluminescence in the sea water. The 40K background is used to calibrate the efficiency of the photo-multiplier tubes.

Erratum: Copy Number Variation and Missense Mutations of the Agouti Signaling Protein (ASIP) Gene in Goat Breeds with Different Coat Colors

In goats, classical genetic studies reported a large number of alleles at the Agouti locus with effects on coat color and pattern distribution. From these early studies, the dominant AWt (white/tan) allele was suggested to cause the white color of the Saanen breed. Here, we sequenced the coding region of the goat ASIP gene in 6 goat breeds (Girgentana, Maltese, Derivata di Siria, Murciano-Granadina, Camosciata delle Alpi, and Saanen), with different coat colors and patterns. Five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified, 3 of which caused missense mutations in conserved positions of the cysteine-rich carboxy-terminal domain of the protein (p.Ala96Gly, p.Cys126Gly, and p.Val128…
