Second harmonic generation in SiO2 sol-gel films functionalized with Ethyl-[4-(4-nitro-phenylazo)-phenyl]-(2-oxiranylmethoxy-ethyl)-amine (ENPMA) mol…

2010

Abstract High concentrations of Ethyl-[4-(4-nitro-phenylazo)-phenyl]-(2-oxiranylmethoxy-ethyl)-amine (ENPMA) chromophores were linked covalently to two different kinds of SiO 2 matrices prepared by the sol–gel method. The matrices differed in their reticulation level, determined by the organometallic precursor used during the synthesis. The materials were deposited as films by spin-coating. The chromophores in the films were oriented in a non-centrosymmetric way by a modified Corona poling set-up, and the nonresonant second order non-linear optical coefficient d 33 (0) of the films was determined by means of the Maker fringe technique. It was found that there is an optimum concentration of …

Optical studies of thin films of alkoxysubstituted oligo(phenylenevinylenes)

2002

Abstract In this work, we study Langmuir films of a family of materials “in-between” the class of distyrylbenzenes and poly( p -phenylenevinylenes), the oligo(phenylenevinylenes), with varying conjugation lengths—from three-phenyl-ring to nine-phenyl-ring system—and different substitution on the terminal benzene rings. We report our investigations on the film-forming properties as well as their optical characterisations.

Oligophenylenevinylenes in Spatially Confined Nanochannels: Monitoring Intermolecular Interactions by UV/Vis and Raman Spectroscopy

2008

Perhydrotriphenylene-based channel-forming inclusion compounds (ICs) and thin films made of polyphenylenevinylene (PPV)-type oligomers with terminal alkoxy groups are investigated and compared in a combined experimental and theoretical approach. Interchromophore interactions and host-guest interactions are elucidated by UV/Vis and Raman spectroscopy. The impact of the local environment of the chromophore on the optical and photophysical properties is discussed in light of quantum-chemical calculations. In stark contrast to thin films where preferential side-by-side orientation leads to quenching of photoluminescence (PL) via non-emissive traps, the ICs are found to be attractive materials f…

Green light-emitting devices based on soluble oligo(phenylenevinylenes)

2005

In this work, we report our investigations on the film-forming properties as well as the optical and electroluminescent characterisations of a series of lateral-substituted soluble oligo(phenylenevinylenes) of various conjugation length. Preliminary investigations show that these materials are potential candidates for use in organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). Two types of OLEDs were fabricated: single layer (SL) and single heterostructure (SHS), with poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) as hole transporting layer. Our best results were obtained with single layer device emitting green light with a luminance of 0.18 cd m(-2) and 0.24 cd m(-2) at a driving voltage of 10 V. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.…

Solvatochromy and electro-optical study of new fluorine-containing chromophores

1998

technology requires tailored functional materials which fulfill the demands for optimal operation parameters, reliability andprocessability. Organic chromophores and polymers which contain covalently bound chromophores are promising materialclasses which can satisfy a broad spectrum of demands on functional materials for photonics, and they are, therefore, favorites for the development of new photonic devices. However, it is almost impossible to satisfy all physico-chemical andtechnological requirements simultaneously with a polymer consisting of only one type of functional unit. The developmentof a series of different building blocks which allow to cover the whole range of physico-chemical …
