REVISION OF PLETHIANDRA HOOK.F.: A POLYSTAMINATE, EAST ASIAN GENUS OF MELASTOMATACEAE

Plethiandra (Melastomataceae–Melastomatoideae–Dissochaeteae) comprises seven species in Borneo and one (P. sessiliflora) in the southern part of Peninsular Malaysia and central Sumatra. Plethiandra is easily recognized by its polystaminate androecium, having 16–40 stamens with short, straight, inappendiculate anthers. The closely related Medinilla has a diplostemonous androecium with 8–12 stamens and variously appendaged anthers. A NEW SPECIES OF DISSOCHAETA BLUME (MELASTOMATACEAE) FROM KALIMANTAN (BORNEO, INDONESIA)

Dissochaeta atrobrunnea (Melastomataceae–Dissochaeteae) from Kalimantan (Borneo, Indonesia) is described and illustrated. The species can be assigned to Dissochaeta sect. Dissochaeta and is easily recognized by its dense cover of light brown, sessile, stellate hairs and dark brown, 4–6 mm long bristles on branches, leaf undersurfaces, petioles, inflorescences, bracts and hypanthia. Like all other species of Dissochaeta sect. Dissochaeta, D. atrobrunnea shows heterantherous flowers.
