Cohesion devices of three political texts: The Gettysburgh Address, I Have a Dream and Obama's Inaugural Address.

The present study attempts to add to the existing body of literature on political rhetoric by analyzing in detail the cohesive devices used in three political texts - The Gettysburg Address, I have a dream and Obama"s Inaugural Address and their potential persuasive function. We first carry out an analysis of cohesion in these three masterpieces of political writing, applying our own model based on the combination and adaptation of those found in Halliday & Hasan"s (1976) and Beaugrande & Dressler"s (1981), in order to cover a wider range of devices and, at the same time, ameliorate some flaws ascribed by critics to Halliday & Hasan"s (1976). El uso del glog en la clase de inglés

El presente estudio se ocupa de los glogs utilizados como una herramienta de instrucción para enseñar inglés a estudiantes de Inglés como Lengua Extranjera (EFL) en el nivel C1. Las características de los posters en línea y narrativa digital se examinan en primer lugar, seguidos por los tipos de historias digitales. La última parte del documento se centra en la descripción de un estudio piloto basado en un glog y desarrollado en una clase de Inglés III. Los resultados son positivos en cuanto al aprendizaje colaborativo entre estudiantes, la gramática, el vocabulario y la pronunciación. Manipulation in Spanish and American pre-electoral debates: the Rajoy-Rubalcaba vs. Obama-McCain debates.

In this paper, we make a comparative analysis of two pre-electoral debates belonging to two different traditions ¿ the 2011 Rajoy¿Rubalcaba debate and the first 2008 Obama¿McCain debate ¿ in terms of the manipulative processes used. For that purpose, we compare the similarities and differences in the use of the genre contributing to manipulation in the two debate traditions. Aprender inglés utilizando una red social: Explorando el uso de la red Ning por parte de estudiantes de segunda lengua

Este artículo describe un estudio piloto llevado a cabo con estudiantes de Inglés 5 (nivel B+) en la Universidad de Valencia, la cual incorporó una red social para estudiar inglés fuera del horario lectivo. La herramienta seleccionada fue la web Ning, porque se centraba en el grupo y ofrecía toda una serie de herramientas interesantes – blogs, chats and foros de discusión – que tenían potencial para el aprendizaje del inglés. Los resultados indican que el uso del Ning en combinación con el contacto cara a cara contribuyó a la comunicación y la discusión en inglés y sirvió para estimular la colaboración de los estudiantes y la motivación a participar. Transitivity and Evaluation in American and Spanish Parliamentary discourse: the 2015 State of the Union Address in the US vs. the 2015 State of the Nation Address in Spain

The present study explores the interplay of evaluation and transitivity in an American and Spanish parliamentary debate by President Obama and PM Rajoy aiming at legitimizing their actions and at convincing candidates to vote for them in the upcoming elections. A further objective is to investigate whether the transitivity and appraisal analyses illustrate the politicians’ ideological positions.
