A high pressure gas target system for the determination of absolute electron scattering cross sections

A high pressure gas target system is described, which is suitable for measurements of absolute electron scattering cross sections and for high resolution electron scattering experiments at medium energies. Details of design and construction are given and special investigations are discussed with respect to straggling effects that take place in the walls and in the gases, and to changes in the gas density, due to heating by the electron beam.

On the determination of the proton RMS-radius from electron scattering data

It is shown that the proton rms radius should be determined from fitting a polynomial of second order to the low-q 2 form factors. The commonly used polynomial of first order yields radius values which are too small. The proton rms radius has been redetermined from an analysis of the electron scattering data measured at three laboratories. The best fit value is 〈r E 2 〉1/2=0.87±0.02 fm.

Observation of Meson-Exchange Effects in Deuteron Electrodisintegration

Electrodisintegration of the deuteron has been measured for an incident energy of 300 MeV at 30\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} and 90\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} scattering angles. The maximum energy transfer was 116 MeV. Very good agreement with theory was achieved when the pionic-exchange currents were included. Near the threshold and for momentum transfer $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{q}}_{\mathrm{c}.\mathrm{m}.}^{}{}_{}{}^{2}=3.9$ ${\mathrm{fm}}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$, the meson-exchange currents contribute about 40% to the total cross section.

Threshold Electroproduction of Charged Pions from Light Nuclei

Double-differential cross sections for the electroproduction of pions of both charges have been measured. We compare the data obtained for production near threshold from $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ and $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ with theoretical treatments employing both shell-model and sum-rule nuclear descriptions with full inclusion of the final-state interaction.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE NUCLEONS

Electron-proton and electron-deuteron scattering experiments in a wide four momentum range provide information about the structure of the proton and the neutron. The structure is a direct consequence of the hadronic interaction of the nucleon and reveals properties of the strong interaction. Absolute differential cross sections can be expressed in terms of electromagnetic form factors which lead to an understanding of the coupling mechanism between the electromagnetic field and the strongly interacting hadron. The structure can also be discussed in terms of charge densities, but this analysis is strongly restricted by recoil effects. The charge rms radius extracted from recent measurements …
