Stability and nature of the volume collapse of ε-FeO under extreme conditions
Iron oxides are among the major constituents of the deep Earth's interior. Among them, the epsilon phase of FeO is one of the less studied polymorphs and there is a lack of information about its structural, electronic and magnetic transformations at extreme conditions. Here we report the precise determination of its equation of state and a deep analysis of the evolution of the polyhedral units under compression, thanks to the agreement between our experiments and ab-initio simulations. Our results indicate that this material, with remarkable magnetic properties, is stable at pressures up to 27 GPa. Emergency hernia repair in the elderly: multivariate analysis of morbidity and mortality from an Italian registry
Abstract Purpose The incidence of inguinal hernia is higher in elderly because of aging-related diseases like prostatism, bronchitis, collagen laxity. A conservative management is common in elderly to reduce surgery-related risks, however watchful waiting can expose to obstruction and strangulation. The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of emergency surgery in a large series of elderly with complicated groin hernia and to identify the independent risk factors for postoperative morbidity and mortality. WEAK DECAY OF Λ–HYPERNUCLEI
The nonmesonic weak decay of L hypernuclei is studied in a shell model framework. A complete strangeness-changing weak LN!NN transition potential, based on one boson exchange, is constructed by including the exchange of the pseudoscalar mesons p, K, h as well as the vector mesons r,v, and K*, whose weak-coupling constants are obtained from soft meson theorems and SU~6! w . General expressions for nucleons in arbitrary shells are obtained. The transition matrix elements include realistic LN short-range correlations and NN final state interactions based on the Nijmegen baryon-baryon potential.
