Suppression of electron trapping by quantum dot emitters using a grafted polystyrene shell

2019

A fundamental problem of adding chromophores to an organic host is that their smaller band gap leads to severe trapping of either electrons or holes, resulting in strongly unbalanced transport. We demonstrate that electron trapping by an inorganic quantum dot (QD) in a conjugated polymer host can be suppressed by functionalizing its shell with a thin insulating polystyrene layer. The polystyrene shell not only reduces trapping, but also suppresses detrapping of captured electrons, resulting in increased charging of the QDs with subsequent voltage scans, after initial charging, a red-emitting hybrid polymer:QD light-emitting diode is obtained with voltage independent electroluminescence spec…

Liquid crystalline phases from polymer functionalized ferri-magnetic Fe3O4nanorods

2017

Here, we present the surface functionalization of anisotropic in form ferri-magnetic Fe3O4-nanorods (NRs) with a diblock copolymer, having a PMMA- or PDEGMEMA-block, for solubilization, and a dopamine anchor block. These polymers were synthesized through RAFT polymerization via a macro-initiator approach. The successful surface functionalization, performed via a grafting-to method, was monitored using TGA, IR and TEM measurements. The NRs were very soluble in organic solvents after functionalization. Afterwards, the liquid crystalline (LC) behavior was investigated. During solvent evaporation, birefringent domains were formed. The self-assembly into lyotropic LC structures could be observed…

Origin of enhanced efficiency and stability in diblock copolymer-grafted Cd-free quantum dot-based light-emitting diodes

2021

The efficiency and operational lifetime of quantum dot (QD) based light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) are essentially affected by the electron–hole charge balance. Although various methods have been reported to improve the charge balance, these methods cause issues at the same time, such as increasing a driving voltage and complicating a device structure. In this work, we introduce hybrid InP/ZnSeS/ZnS QDs, in which the oleic acid ligands are substituted with semiconducting diblock copolymer units possessing hole-transporting carbazole groups, to facilitate hole injection and to reduce electron leakage. As a result, the efficiency and the operational lifetime were improved by 1.4-fold and 4-fold,…

Conducting Polymer with Orthogonal Catechol and Disulfide Anchor Groups for the Assembly of Inorganic Nanostructures

2017

To combine several inorganic components with organic material in a controlled special and permanent manner still remains a difficult issue. Two specifically functionalized block copolymers were synthesized separately and combined in a second step. A heterofunctional poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) block copolymer bearing a single amino unit, a short PEG spacer, and multiple catechol functionalities was obtained via anionic ring-opening polymerization (AROP). Using the reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) radical polymerization technique, a semiconducting block copolymer with carbazole side groups was obtained. The second polyacrylate block contained reactive ester groups and …
