Ethical, Religious and Legal Arguments in the Current Debate over Euthanasia in Spain In the last ten years, there have been several cases in Spain (Ramón Sampedro, Leganés, Jorge León that have led to an intense social debate on euthanasia. The recent case of Inmaculada Echevarría, a woman suffering from a serious disease that kept her immobilized in bed, has revived the debate on euthanasia in Spain. On 18 October 2006 she held a press conference and publicly asked to be disconnected from the ventilator that kept her alive. En este trabajo me concentro en el hecho de la argumentación en Karl-Otto Apel, para intentar comprender, según este autor, en qué consiste, por qué es tan importante para la fundamentación de la ética y qué significa argumentar racionalmente. A partir de ahí camino con Apel más allá de Apel mostrando la importancia de incorporar la dimensión del humor para que la argumentación realmente avance hacia la verdad y la justicia. Smiling and laughter are voluntary expressions that come from deep within ourselves. They are reflections of the character we construct through the exercise of our own will. Given that we can laugh in an ethically correct or incorrect manner, an “ethical sense of humour” reflects to what extent an individual’s ethics education has been correctly taught. “Ethical humour” is also therapeutic, in the sense that it is beneficial for one’s health. For example, it stimulates the immune system to fight the negative effects of stress, and stimulates the secretion of endorphins, which have an analgesic effect.
