Self-assembly mechanism of nanoparticles of Ni-based Prussian Blue analogues at the air/liquid interface: a synchrotron X-ray reflectivity study.
Prussian Blue analogue (PBA) nanoparticles can be self-assembled at air/liquid interfaces to build novel materials with interesting magnetic features. Herein, we study the influence of the size of PBA Cs0.4 Ni[Cr(CN)6 ]0.9 and K0.25 Ni[Fe(CN)6 ]0.75 nanoparticles on the self-assembly behavior by synchrotron X-ray reflectivity. Both nanoparticles show similar Z-potential values. The phospholipid dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine and the amino surfactant dimethyldioctadecylammonium have been used as Langmuir monolayers to anchor the PBA nanoparticles and study the interplay of forces directing the self-assembly of the nanoparticles at the surfactant/liquid interface. Whereas Cs0.4 Ni[Cr(CN)6 ]0.…
Two-dimensional magnetic behaviour in hybrid NiFe-layered double hydroxides by molecular engineering
Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a class of two-dimensional (2D) anionic materials that exhibit remarkable chemical versatility, making them ideal building blocks in the design of complex multifunctional materials. In this line, a NiFe-LDH is probably one of the most important LDHs due to its interesting electrochemical and magnetic properties. However, no direct magnetic measurements of exfoliated NiFe-LDH nanosheets have been reported so far. Herein, we synthesize a hybrid NiFe-LDH family through anion exchange reactions using surfactant molecules in order to increase the interlayer space (ranging from 8 to 31.6 Å), minimizing the interlayer dipolar interactions. By intercalation with…
Low-Frequency Imaginary Impedance at the Superconducting Transition of 2H-NbSe2
The superconducting transition leads to a sharp resistance drop in a temperature interval that can be a small fraction of the critical temperature T$_c$. A superconductor exactly at T$_c$ is thus very sensitive to all kinds of thermal perturbations, including the heat dissipated by the measurement current. We show that the interaction between electrical and thermal currents leads to a sizeable imaginary impedance at frequencies of order of tens of Hz at the resistive transition of single crystals of the layered material 2H-NbSe$_2$. We explain the result using models developed for transition edge sensors. By measuring under magnetic fields and at high currents, we find that the imaginary im…
Path to Overcome Material and Fundamental Obstacles in Spin Valves Based on MoS2 and Other Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides
Experimental studies on spin valves with exfoliated 2D materials face the main technological issue of ferromagnetic electrode oxidation during the 2Ds integration process. As a twofold outcome, magnetoresistance (MR) signals are very difficult to obtain and, when they finally are, they are often far from expectations. We propose a fabrication method to circumvent this key issue for 2D-based spintronics devices. We report on the fabrication of NiFe/MoS2/Co spin valves with mechanically exfoliated multilayer MoS2 using an in situ fabrication protocol that allows high-quality nonoxidized interfaces to be maintained between the ferromagnetic electrodes and the 2D layer. Devices display a large …
Influence of Fe-clustering on the water oxidation performance of two-dimensional layered double hydroxides
Among the two-dimensional (2D) materials family, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) represent a key member due to their unparalleled chemical versatility. In particular, Fe-based LDHs are distinguished candidates due to their high efficiency as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Herein, we have selected MgFe-based LDH phases as model systems in order to decipher whether Fe-clustering exerts an effect on the OER performance. For that, we have optimized hydrothermal synthesis by using triethanolamine (TEA) as the chelating agent. The magnetic characterisation allows us to identify the Fe-clustering degree by following both magnetic susceptibility as well as magnetization values a…
Sublimable complexes with spin switching: chemical design, processing as thin films and integration in graphene-based devices
Among the different types of switchable molecular compounds, sublimable Fe(II) SCO molecules provide a suitable platform to develop smart devices that respond to external stimuli. Here we report the synthesis, crystallographic structure and magnetic properties of three new neutral Fe(II) SCO molecules belonging to the {Fe[H2B(pz)2]2(L)} family with bidentate-alpha-diimine ligands L = 3-(pyridin-2-yl)-[1,2,3]triazolo[1,5-a]pyridine (tzpy), 5,5,6,6-tetrahydro-4H,4H-2,2-bi(1,3-thiazine) (btz) and 4,4,5,5-tetrahydro-2,2-bithiazole (bt) (1, 2 and 3, respectively), as well as two solvated forms of 1 and 3. All three desolvated compounds present thermal- and light-induced SCO transitions with diff…
Inside Cover: Exploiting Reaction-Diffusion Conditions to Trigger Pathway Complexity in the Growth of a MOF
How do you unveil pathway complexity in a crystallization process? In their Research Article on page 15920, Alessandro Sorrenti, Marco D′Abramo, Guillermo Mínguez Espallargas, Josep Puigmartí-Luis, and co-workers show that harnessing a reaction-diffusion (RD) process within a continuous flow microfluidic device, and on a millisecond timescale, is key to enable two unprecedented nucleation-growth pathways during a MOF synthesis.
WS2/MoS2 Heterostructures through Thermal Treatment of MoS2 Layers Electrostatically Functionalized with W3S4 Molecular Clusters
The preparation of 2D stacked layers that combine flakes of different nature, gives rise to countless number of heterostructures where new band alignments, defined at the interfaces, control the electronic properties of the system. Among the large family of 2D/2D heterostructures, the one formed by the combination of the most common semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides WS2/MoS2, has awaken great interest due to its photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical properties. Solution as well as dry physical methods have been developed to optimize the synthesis of these heterostructures. Here a suspension of negatively charged MoS2 flakes is mixed with a methanolic solution of a cationic W3S…
