Bilateral buccal space lipoma: A rare case presentation

2019

Background The lipoma of the oral cavity is a relatively rare pathology, characterized by overgrowth of the mature adipocytes. Buccal fat pad lipomas usually interfere with the esthetics and the function of the face. Case Report A sixteen-year-old patient reported slow-growing swelling, which started two years ago. Clinical examination revealed two bilateral masses in the soft tissue. MRI imaging revealed a characteristic image of bilateral lipomas connected to the buccal fat pad. Surgical removal was conducted and the histology report confirmed our clinical diagnosis of common lipoma. Discussion The lipoma of the buccal fat pad is a benign neoplasm of the adipose tissue. It should be remov…

Canalicular adenoma with unicystic morphology. A rare entity

2021

Background Canalicular adenoma (CA) is a benign salivary gland tumor (SGT) almost exclusively affecting the minor salivary glands, predominantly of the upper lip, and exhibiting characteristic histopathologic features. As observed in several other SGTs, a commonly encountered finding is the presence of prominent cystic morphology. Even though a multicystic appearance is usually noticed, solitary cystic CAs may rarely occur. Case report Two female patients (74 and 78 years old respectively) presented for the evaluation of submucosal asymptomatic masses of the oral cavity. In the 1st case a solitary nodule was noticed in the upper lip, while the 2nd patient exhibited two symmetrical lesions o…

Pericoronitis: A clinical and epidemiological study in greek military recruits

2019

Background This paper presents a statistical analysis of epidemiological, clinical and radiographical characteristics of third molar-related pericoronitis. Material and methods 650 conscripts of the First Training Division of Conscript Soldiers of 2005 in Greece were recruited for the study. Each conscript was given a questionnaire and underwent a clinical test and a radiographic examination. The tested variables included the conscripts' personal information, oral hygiene parameters along with the radiographic angulation of the third molar, the level of impaction and their classification in relation to the edge of the mandible. Results The prevalence of pericoronitis was found to be 4.92%. …

Mucocele of the dorsal surface of the tongue : a case report

2018

Mucoceles represent one of the most common lesions of the oral cavity, developing as a result of saliva accumulation. The most frequent affected area is the lower lip, followed by floor of mouth, ventral tongue and buccal mucosa. Despite numerous reports of mucoceles originating on the ventral surface of the tongue, only scarce cases of such a lesion identified on the dorsal tongue surface have been described. In this report a mucocele developed on the dorsal tongue of a 74-year-old woman is described. Additionally a review of previously published mucoceles of the dorsal surface of the tongue is provided and discussed. A 74-year-old female patient was referred for a painless swelling on the…

Recurrence in a patient with a 10-year history of sinonasal mucosal melanoma manifesting as facial swelling

2017

Sinonasal mucosal melanoma is a rare tumor that develops slowly and may manifest with non specific signs and symptoms, causing significant delay in diagnosis. Local recurrence is common and usually occurs within the first two years after the initial treatment. Prognosis of recurrent lesions is poor and 5-year survival ranges between 10-47%. We report the clinical, radiographic, histopathological and immunohistochemical findings of a recurrent sinonasal mucosal melanoma which was diagnosed 10 years after the initial treatment, in a patient who presented with unilateral facial swelling and one-sided difficulty in breathing of two years duration. We discuss the causes of late diagnosis and rev…
