Influence of cachexia and sarcopenia on survival in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma: a systematic review.

2014

Abstract Background/objectives Cachexia affects ∼80% of pancreatic cancer patients. An international consensus defines cachexia as an ongoing loss of skeletal muscle mass (sarcopenia) with or without loss of fat, which impairs body functioning and cannot be reversed by conventional nutritional measures. Weight loss percentage and elevated inflammation markers have been employed to define this condition earlier. This review aimed to assess the prevalence and consequences of cachexia and sarcopenia on survival in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Methods The systematic review was performed by searching the articles with preset terms published in PubMed and Cochrane Database unti…

Role of endoscopic ultrasonography in the evaluation of high risk pancreatic cystic lesions: Ten year single center experience

2012

s / Pancreatology 12 (2012) 502–597 530 selenium content in second group was increased up to 96,5 3,29 mg/l (p <0,001). Conclusions: SS is an effective drug in treatment of selenium deficiency and could be used in initial complex therapy for pain relief in CP.

Thiopurine

2020

Background: Thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) plays a significant role in the metabolism of thiopurines, and, for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), it is useful to perform TPMT genotyping prior to azathioprine (AZA) treatment. In this study, we determined TPMT gene polymorphisms in a cohort of IBD patients in Latvia. Methods: DNA samples were obtained from 244 IBD patients, and qPCR was performed for detection of rs1800462, rs1800460, and rs1142345 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Three common, non-functional TPMT alleles ( TPMT*2, *3B, and *3C) were identified (women, 51%; men, 49%). TPMT*2, *3A, *3B, and *3C allelic variants detected using qPCR were consistent with …

The role of body muscle mass as an indicator of activity in inflammatory bowel disease patients

2020

Malnutrition is an objective disease activity parameter for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly Crohn's Disease (CD), and is an indicator of lesion expansion or inflammatory activity. Active disease is correlated with the systemic response of the body's immune system, activating a hypermetabolic state and protein degradation (Argiles JM, 2015). These conditions lead to malnutrition, which significantly increases the risk of impaired clinical outcomes, such as delayed recovery or increased mortality (Landi F, 2019). Our aim was to identify malnutrition parameters associated with more pronounced metabolic status changes in IBD patients (i.e., classified as by low and …

One center experience of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis

2017

Introduction Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare benign condition, in which gas is found in a linear or cystic form in the subserosa or submucosa. The subserous cysts are most frequently found in the small bowel while the submucous localizations are predominantly seen in the colonic wall. Peritoneal pneumatosis, abdominal gas cysts, cystic lymphopneumatosis, intestinal emphysema or intestinal gas cysts are terms used to describe the occurrence of multiple, gas-filled cysts, of the gastrointestinal tract. Incidence of PCI was reported to be 0.03% in the general population. It is a radiographic finding and not a diagnosis, as the etiology varies from benign conditions to fulmin…
