The environmental and land protection could be obtained promoting an agricultural activity that encourages the business competitiveness respecting the traditions. In Pantelleria, ‘black island’ in the middle of Mediterranean, the viticultural surface has significantly decreased in the last years, causing a massive rural exodus. The south-western part of Sicily is the largest Italian production area of Navel oranges where in 2008 it was established the Arancia di Ribera Prot ected Designation of Origin (PDO). Pantelleria is the largest of the Sicilian satellite islands. Its economy, after tourism, is based on farming. The main crop is the “Zibibbo” grape, from which it is obtained “Passito” and “Moscato di Pantelleria”, both sweet fortified wines. Sicily is the main organic area of Italian territory and represents the first region for organic cereals.
