Il saggio, attraverso l'analisi di svariati passi dei "Moralia" e delle "Vite" contenenti citazioni e rimandi espliciti ai più importanti esponenti della medicina ellenistica o semplici allusioni alle loro teorie, ricostruisce il debito di Plutarco nei confronti di quel sapere, mostrando come, insieme ai trattati ippocratici, anche gli scritti di Erofilo, Erasistrato, Asclepiade di Bitinia, Temisone di Laodicea, dovessero far parte della 'biblioteca' di Plutarco. At various points in Method of medicine and in a passage in the Commentary on the Hippocratic Epidemics Galen takes up the image of the tyrant doctor employed by Plato in the famous passage in the Laws in which, to illustrate the role of the proem to the law, he introduces the contrast between doctors of freemen and doctors of slaves (Leg. IV 719e 8-720e 5) : this is an unexplored chapter of Galen’s Platonism.

This paper, through the analysis of some passages by Galen, reconstructs the theory of health worked out by the Methodist school of medicine, also highlighting the considerable differences between them: from the definition of health as symmetria ton poron that Galen attributes to Asclepiades and Thessalus to the introduction of the concept of metasynkrisis by Themison, from Olympicus' theory which identifies health with eustatheia of actions to the return to the traditional concept of symmetria in Julian, one of the latest Methodists.

Libro introduttivo al De sanitate tuenda, il testo qui presentato è il concentrato delle teorie della salute che hanno dominato per più di mille anni in campo medico. Il trattato sull'Igiene di Galeno rappresenta la monumentale conclusione di una riflessione sulla salute e sui mezzi per tutelarla che, avviata in alcuni scritti del Corpus Hippocraticum, non aveva mai cessato, nel mondo greco, di suscitare l'interesse di medici e filosofi, riaffermando la vocazione di tutta l'igiene antica a configurarsi, assai più che non l'igiene modernamente intesa, come una complessiva "arte del vivere".

From generation to degeneration. The health-disease link in Galen's corpus

Through a reading of some significant passages a reconstruction is made of the main features of Galen’s rich reflection on the themes of health and disease, with particular attention to two aspects. On one side, there is an analysis of the limits within which disease is seen, in the Galenic corpus, as ‘degeneration’ in relation to a ‘natural’ state. The essay, after an overview of the theories of the dream expressed in medical texts and philosophical reflection in the Greek world, analyzes the references to the dream present in the Galenic corpus, with specific reference to the presence of this motif in the context of polemics with exponents of other medical schools. „Un conflitto intestino e una malattia dell’anima“: ΝΟΣΟΣ E ΣΤΑΣΙΣ nel Sofista di Platone (Soph. 228 A 7–8)

Abstract In Sophist 228a7–8 the reading of Plato’s manuscripts διαφορᾶς διαφϑοράν is defended on the basis of a reconsideration of the Galenic passages of De placitis Hippocratis et Platonis (V 2, p. 302, 18–19 and V 3, p. 310, 26 De Lacy) usually advanced in order to maintain that it is corrupt and is to be changed into in διαφϑορᾶς διαφοράν. The analysis of several other passages of the Platonic corpus concerning στάσις and νόσος, and the comparison with Plutarch’s De Stoicorum repugnantiis 1041b, which shows a textual history very similar to the considered passage of Plato’s Sophist, further support the reading in the manuscripts.
