Caustic ingestion: CT findings of esophageal injuries and thoracic complications

2020

Ingestion of caustic substances, whether accidental or for the purpose of suicide, can cause severe lesions of the lips, oral cavity, pharynx, upper gastrointestinal system, and upper airways. In particular, caustic agents could be responsible for severe esophageal injuries resulting in short- and long-term complications. Because of these important clinical implications, timely diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial. In the evaluation of esophageal injuries, thoraco-abdominal computed tomography (CT) is preferable to endoscopy as it avoids the risk of esophageal perforation and allows the evaluation of esophageal injuries as well as of the surrounding tissue. In this review, we re…

Radiomics Analyses of Schwannomas in the Head and Neck: A Preliminary Analysis

2022

The purpose of this preliminary study was to evaluate the differences in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)-based radiomics analysis between cerebellopontine angle neurinomas and schwannomas originating from other locations in the neck spaces. Twenty-six patients with available MRI exams and head and neck schwannomas were included. Lesions were manually segmented on the precontrast and postcontrast T1 sequences. The radiomics features were extracted by using PyRadiomics software, and a total of 120 radiomics features were obtained from each segmented tumor volume. An operator-independent hybrid descriptive‐inferential method was adopted for the selection and reduction of the features, while d…

Radiosurgery in the treatment of the glottic plane carcinoma

2003

Abstract During the last 20 years, various conservative surgical techniques have been proposed to treat larynx cancer. On the basis of our various experiences and of the ultrastructural data on the tissues treated with radiowaves, we decided to also use radiosurgery in operations under direct microlaryngoscopy. We select 18 patients suffering from epidermoid carcinoma. These patients had been referred to our ENT clinic at the Polichnico of Palermo between 1999 and 2001. The authors describe the surgical procedures used and emphasize the advantages of radiosurgery in the treatment of larynx cancer.

Laryngeal amyloidosis

2020

Laryngeal amyloidosis is a rare and idiopathic disease that represents about 1% of all benign laryngeal lesions. It is characterized by the extracellular deposition of an abnormal amount of non-soluble fibrillar proteins in larynx. This disease presents unspecific symptoms and laringoscopic findings that make difficult to diagnose it. Management of these lesions consists of endoscopic resection of the mass through microdirect laryngoscopy. Recurrence is possible and it can occur up to 10 years after treatment; therefore a close and long-term follow-up is requested. A 60-year-old man presented with hoarseness and dysphonia. Laryngoscopy revealed a smooth, translucent and yellowish formation …

Diagnostic performance of qualitative and radiomics approach to parotid gland tumors: which is the added benefit of texture analysis?

2021

Objective: To investigate whether MRI-based texture analysis improves diagnostic performance for the diagnosis of parotid gland tumors compared to conventional radiological approach. Methods: Patients with parotid gland tumors who underwent salivary glands MRI between 2008 and 2019 were retrospectively selected. MRI analysis included a qualitative assessment by two radiologists (one of which subspecialized on head and neck imaging), and texture analysis on various sequences. Diagnostic performances including sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of qualitative features, radiologists’ diagnosis, and radiomic models were evaluated. Result…

Anodal tDCS of the swallowing motor cortex for treatment of dysphagia in multiple sclerosis: a pilot open-label study

2017

Swallowing difficulties are a common symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS). The early detection and treatment of dysphagia is critical to prevent complications, including poor nutrition, dehydration, and lung infections. Recently, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been proven to be effective in ameliorating swallowing problems in stroke patients. In this pilot study, we aimed to assess safety and efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in the treatment of dysphagia in MS patients. We screened 30 patients by using the 10-item DYsphagia in MUltiple Sclerosis (DYMUS) questionnaire, and patients at risk for dysphagia underwent a clinical and fiberoptic endoscopi…

Hemangiopericytoma: A cause of recurrent epistaxis

2020

Hemangiopericytoma is a soft tissue tumor with histological variability and unpredictable clinical and biological behavior. this disease is uncommon in the head and neck and the growth pattern is unspecific; thus, diagnosis is often made by exclusion. A 43-year-old woman presented with a story of recurrent epistaxis associated to a growing mass in the paranasal sinus and a paraneoplastic syndrome. the imaging revealed an hypervascular tumor in the right nasal cavity and obliteration of all the ipsilateral sinus cavities. after biopsy the lesion was removed with resolution of epistaxis and paraneoplastic syndrome. There has been no evidence of disease recurrence in 3 years of follow-up. Our …

Radiosurgery in the treatment of laryngeal abductor paralysis

2003

Abstract Abductor true vocal cord paralysis is a complex condition that requires the surgeon to perform an emergency tracheotomy to eliminate the symptom of dyspnea. Throughout the past 20 years, corrective surgery has reverted to techniques using external or endoscopic techniques. For 5 years now, we have used high frequency radiosurgery by Ellman to treat various ENT conditions in our clinic. The experience we have gained has encouraged us to use this method in endoscopic surgery as well, in the treatment of laryngeal abductor paralysis under suspension microlaryngoscopy. Twelve patients were examined between 1999 and 2002. Diagnosis was performed through flexible fiberoptic videolaryngos…

Familial occurrence of warthin tumour: Our experience and review of the literature

2016

The tumour of Warthin (WT) is the second parotid tumour for frequency after the pleomorphic adenoma, it represents about 2% to 15% of all parotid tumors. The pathogenesis of familial Warthin Tumour is unknown, even if cytogenetic abnormalities have been identified in Warthin Tumour. Among the inducing factors there is the smoke which has an important role. Familial occurrence of Warthin Tumour is rare, only five reports in the literature. Two of them were reported in brothers, two in a mother and son and one in monozygotic twins. We quote a case of familiar Warthin Tumour arisen in two brothers and we present a review of the Literature.

Schwannoma of the larynx. Case report

2005

Neuretogenous tumours of the larynx are extremely uncommon. We present a case of schwannoma of the larynx and review pertinent data in the literature. Laryngeal schwannoma was discovered in a 80-year-old woman who complained of persistent dysphonia. The histological findings leading to diagnosis together with the therapeutic surgical procedure are described. There was no postoperative complication and functional outcome was excellent at six months follow-up, demonstrating that conservative surgery is required for this type of disease. Conservative surgery provides excellent results. Although very rare, schwannoma should be taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis of any laryng…

Carotid Sinus Syndrome Secondary to Laryngocele: A Case Report

2021

Introduction: Carotid sinus syndrome (CSS) is a hypersensitivity of the carotid sinus manifested by atrioventricular sinus bradycardia or decreased arterial pressure of at least 50 mmHg. Triggering factors can be neck movements, shaving of the beard or too-tight collars. CSS can be rarely caused by the presence of malignant or benign masses in the head and neck area. Case Report: A 49 years-old white woman with a laterocervical mass presented recurrent episodes of sinus bradycardia related to head’s rotation. Neck CT scan revealed a right piolaryngocele and internal left laryngocele. Episodes of bradycardia were disappeared after endolaryngeal carbon dioxide laser assisted marsupialization.…

Management of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo of lateral semicircular canal by Gufoni's manoeuvre

2009

Abstract Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) of lateral semicircular canal (LSC) is one of the rarer forms of BPPV as compared to posterior semicircular canal BPPV. Various particle repositioning manoeuvres have been described in the literature as a mode of treating this condition. Purpose Evaluation and discussion of the procedure of the Gufoni's manoeuvre and its advantages in the treatment of BPPV of LSC. Material and methods Prospective study of 58 patients affected by LSC BPPV who were office-treated with Gufoni's manoeuvre. Results Seventy-nine percent of the patients so treated had complete resolution of symptoms, and 6.9% did not show any improvement in their symptoms. The r…
