Neutron diffraction studies of structural and magnetic properties of niobium doped cobaltites.

2009

Neutron powder diffraction studies of the structural and magnetic properties of the La(1-x)Sr(x)Nb(y)Co(1-y)O(3) solid solutions (x = 0.2, 0.5; y = 0, 0.075, 0.1) have been performed. Substitution of Co(2+) by Nb(5+) prevents the formation of Co(4+) and leads to stabilization of the Co(3+) ions in the high- or intermediate-spin state. This is accompanied by the significant change of the Co-O bond length as well as Co-O-Co bond angle in the CoO(6) octahedron. The obtained data are in agreement with the negative sign of the magnetic exchange interactions Co(3+)-O-Co(3+) in a relatively wide range of the Co-O-Co bond angles. Diamagnetic dilution by the niobium ions prevents long-range magnetic…

Airborne observations of a subvisible midlevel Arctic ice cloud: microphysical and radiative characterization

2009

Abstract. During the Arctic Study of Tropospheric Aerosol, Clouds and Radiation (ASTAR) campaign, which was conducted in March and April 2007, an optically thin ice cloud was observed at around 3 km altitude south of Svalbard. The microphysical and radiative properties of this particular subvisible midlevel cloud were investigated with complementary remote sensing and in-situ instruments. Collocated airborne lidar remote-sensing and spectral solar radiation measurements were performed at a flight altitude of 2300 m below the cloud base. Under almost stationary atmospheric conditions, the same subvisible midlevel cloud was probed with various in-situ sensors roughly 30 min later. From indivi…

Magnetic and structural properties of the double-perovskite Ca2FeReO6

2002

Abstract We suceeded in the preparation of polycrystalline Ca2FeReO6 which has a Curie temperature TC of 540 K, the highest value of all magnetic perovskites investigated till now. This material has been characterised by X-ray and neutron powder diffraction. We found at 548 K, a monoclinic unit cell (space group P21/n) with a=5.4366(5) A , b=5.5393(5) A , c=7.7344(5) A , and β=90.044(4)°. For temperatures below 400 K, a phase separation in two monoclinic phases with identical cell volume is observed in neutron scattering. The two phases possess different magnetic structure and coercivity. The conductivity is thermally activated for all temperatures and no significant magnetoresistivity is o…

Large solid-angle polarisation analysis at thermal neutron wavelengths using a 3He spin filter

2002

Abstract The strongly spin-dependent absorption of neutrons in nuclear spin-polarised 3 He opens up the possibility of polarising neutrons from reactors and spallation sources over the full kinematical range of cold, thermal and hot neutrons. In this paper we describe the first large solid-angle polarisation analysis measurement using a 3 He neutron spin filter at thermal neutron wavelengths ( λ =2.5 A). This experiment was performed on the two-axis diffractometer D1B at the Institut Laue-Langevin using a banana-shaped filter cell (530 cm 3 ) filled with 3 He gas with a polarisation of P =52% at a pressure of 2.7 bar. A comparison is made with a previous measurement on D7 using a cold neutr…

Crystal structure and magnetism of the double perovskites A2FeReO6 (A=Ca, Sr, Ba)

2004

Abstract We synthesized a series of double perovskites A 2 FeReO 6 (A=Ca, Sr, Ba) with Curie temperatures above room-temperature. Neutron and X-ray diffraction analysis have been performed in order to determine the structural and (local) magnetic properties of these materials. While Ba 2 FeReO 6 stays cubic over the whole temperature range we examined, the Sr-compound shows a tetragonal distortion of the perovskite structure which does not completely vanish up to about 520 K far above T C . Ca 2 FeReO 6 has a monoclinic unit cell at high temperatures. Below 400 K a phase separation in two monoclinic phases with identical cell volume is observed in neutron scattering.

Effect of Lung Recruitment and Titrated Positive End-Expiratory Pressure (PEEP) vs Low PEEP on Mortality in Patients With Acute Respiratory Distress …

2017

Importance The effects of recruitment maneuvers and positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) titration on clinical outcomes in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remain uncertain. Objective To determine if lung recruitment associated with PEEP titration according to the best respiratory-system compliance decreases 28-day mortality of patients with moderate to severe ARDS compared with a conventional low-PEEP strategy. Design, Setting, and Participants Multicenter, randomized trial conducted at 120 intensive care units (ICUs) from 9 countries from November 17, 2011, through April 25, 2017, enrolling adults with moderate to severe ARDS. Interventions An experimental strat…
