ABSRACT: In this study I relate the building of the Basilica of Estrela (Lisbon) to the painting by Pompeo Battoni and the poem by Faustino Arevalo, both dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, whose worship, suffering a similar fate to that of the suppressed Society of Jesus (1773), went beyond the ecclesiastical sphere and became a source of controversy in the secular milieu of the period.
