Sculture in facciata: l’espressione dell’identità siciliana nelle architetture monumentali tra Regime e Repubblica

After an introduction on the issue of the art-architecture relationship during Fascism, the paper analyzes four significant cases in the delicate historical transition from the Regime to the republican age in Sicily, in order to understand the role of artistic decorations in the facade, in relation to the architecture and cultural traditions of the island. The first two belong to the monumental type of the Palace of Justice, while the others are representative buildings: a Hotel and a Bank.

Arturo Dazzi e Marcello Piacentini: un lungo sodalizio

The paper investigates the collaboration between an artist and an architect who were among the main protagonists of the Italian cultural scene of the first half of the twentieth century: Arturo Dazzi and Marcello Piacentini. Starting from the plaster model which portrays them together and that reproduces a detail of a monumental work conceived by both between 1924 and 1931, the Arco ai Caduti of Genoa, the analysis will briefly focus on the occasions when the two characters collaborated for the realization of monumental civil and religious works until the post-war period. In Sicily, the walls of many public buildings built in the interwar period house scenes related to official events – historical milestones for the fascist government, such as the March on Rome or the creation of the Empire, and episodes referring to the “micro-history” of the island, such as the visits of Mussolini – or which depiction realistic characters evoking the local population in their context.
