International audience; Un diagnostic réalisé en 2008 sur une emprise de 98 ha, au nord-est de Chalon-sur-Saône, a mis au jour une voie, une petite zone funéraire, ainsi que quatre aires d’occupation témoignant de la présence de bâtiments à vocation domestique et agricole (grange) occupés des deux derniers tiers du IIIe siècle au milieu du IVe siècle ap. J.-C. La distribution linéaire des vestiges sur une longueur de 1 300 m suscite un vif intérêt et pose plusieurs questions quant à la nature exacte de l’occupation. In advance of the future extension of the “technopole” and the construction of a service station in the district of Magny-Cours, the undertaking of two evaluations covering 15 hectares and 4 hectares, respectively, has revealed dense occupation of the site from the Neolithic period to the Middle Ages. The increase or decrease of the number of settlements is frequently used to assess the interactions between ancient societies and their environment. Beside this quantitative indicator, the pattern and the spatial extent of a settlement are crucial to estimate the " human pressure " on the environment. Within the ArchaeDyn program, several quantitative indicators have been developed to characterise the spatial and hierarchical structure of a settlements' scatter. The application of these indicators in four regions of Southern and Central Gaul shows the evolution of the spatial and hierarchical configurations of the settlement through phases of increasing and reducing rates of occupation.
