Synthesis, spectral and magnetic properties of two different 2-nitrobenzoatocopper(II) complexes containing N,N-diethylnicotinamide

Abstract Two structurally different complexes, [Cu2(2-NO2Bz)4(denia)1]n (1) and [Cu(2-NO2Bz)2(denia)2(H2O)2] (2), were prepared from the same reaction (where 2-NO2Bz = 2-nitrobenzoate, denia = N,N-diethylnicotinamide) and they are reported together with [Cu2(2-NO2Bz)4(DMF)2] (3) (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide). The compounds under study were characterized by elemental analysis, electronic, IR and EPR spectra, magnetic measurements over the temperature range of 1.8–300 K and X-ray analysis. Abstract Synthesis and characterization of two new cobalt(II) complexes, namely monomeric [Co(2-MeSnic)2(H2O)4] · 4H2O (2-MeSnic is 2-methylthionicotinate) and polymeric {[{2,6-(MeO)2nic}2(H2O)2Co(μ-H2O)Co(H2O)4(μ-H2O)]{2,6-(MeO)2nic}2 · 6H2O}n (2,6-(MeO)2nic is 2,6-dimethoxynicotinate), are reported. The characterizations were based on elemental analysis, infrared and electronic spectra as well as magnetic measurements. Crystal structures of both complexes have been determined. In the title compound, [Cu(C2O4)(C6H7NO)2] n , the CuII atom is six-coordinated in a slightly deformed elongated octahedral arrangement and the 3-(hydroxymethyl)pyridine ligand, surprisingly, acts as a monodentate ligand coordinated only through the N atom of the pyridine ring. The oxalate ligands, on inversion centres, bridge the metal ions, forming infinite chains. The chains are linked by intermolecular O—H...O hydrogen bonds into a three-dimensional network.
