After the fall of Rhodes in 1522, the Order of St. John needed to recover new headquarters (which were finally established in Malta in 1530) and its reputation as militia Christi. This Religion in arms had now to redraft its chivalrous ideals within the new context of the Reformation and the Catholic Renewal. However, Hospitallers met this challenge partially and late, although they represented themselves as belonging to this glorious Religion. Il saggio ricostruisce le vicende della famiglia Torongi di Maiorca, che all’inizio del ‘500 si trasferì in Sicilia in fuga dal luogo di origine, dove a motivo dell’ascendenza giudeo-conversa era perseguitata dal locale tribunale inquisitoriale. A Palermo i Torongi si integrarono pienamente nel contesto politico, sociale ed economico locale, anche grazie alle relazioni parentali e clientelari strette con esponenti chiave dell’Ordine di Malta in Sicilia. In tal modo riuscirono a purificare il loro sangue converso e a cancellare il loro scomodo passato.
