European Hadron Facility

In this contribution we survey the physics potential of a facility such as EHF in somewhat general terms. In other words, we outline some fundamental questions in nuclear physics and low energy particle physics to whose advancement EHF can and will make substantial contributions, without going into specific experiments needed to answer them. It is the role of the case studies, presented in the EHF proposal(1), to illustrate the kind of experimental effort (typical beam requirements, characteristic detectors, size of experiments, etc.) needed at EHF for the physics one wishes to clarify.

Abstract The violation of baryon number, B , is an essential ingredient for the preferential creation of matter over antimatter needed to account for the observed baryon asymmetry in the Universe. However, such a process has yet to be experimentally observed. The HIBEAM/NNBAR program is a proposed two-stage experiment at the European Spallation Source to search for baryon number violation. The last few years have been witness to a proliferation of new results concerning heavy exotic hadrons. Experimentally, many new signals have been discovered that could be pointing towards the existence of tetraquarks, pentaquarks, and other exotic configurations of quarks and gluons. Theoretically, advances in lattice field theory techniques place us at the cusp of understanding complex coupled-channel phenomena, modelling grows more sophisticated, and effective field theories are being applied to an ever greater range of situations.
