Design and realization of a radon chamber as a secondary standard

The air-radon mixture is the most significant source of natural radiation in workplaces and within dwellings. Despite some uncertainty in the risk estimates, it is widely believed that greater the exposure to radon, greater the risk of developing lung cancer. To assess the radiological hazard, accurate measurements of radon concentrations are necessary. A large variety of radon monitoring instruments have been developed in the last years, usually calibrated in radon chambers containing a known radon concentration released within the chamber by a specific solid radium-226 source. Radon calibration chamber has been constructed to test and calibrate radon and radon progeny detectors at various…

I disturbi alimentari: anoressia e bulimia.

According to the Italian Judicial System, a child under 14 years of age is not criminally responsible. A minor, less than 18 but over 14 years old, can bear criminal responsibility only if competent. This paper discusses some of the clinical aspects of establishing sanity/competency (‘compos mentis’) or insanity/ incompetency (‘non compos mentis’) and the legal and clinical implications of declaring an adolescent offender insane – Can he/she be imprisoned? Hospitalized? Should he/she be treated any differently than a non minor under the same circumstances?

The red ear syndrome and migraine: the role of the parasympathetic system in a complex and intriguing clinical association

Background and aims: The red ear syndrome (RES) is a rare syndrome characterized by burning pain and cutaneous erythema in the ear. It is probably due to an autonomic dysfunction, because of a hypofunction of sympathetic and/or a hyperactivity of parasympathetic control. We have previously described an intriguing association with migraine. In the present study, we have investigated the pathophysiological links between the RES and the clinical features of migraine, and pointed out the crucial role of the parasympathetic system. Methods: A total of 172 young migraine sufferers (92 M and 80 F, aged 4–17 years) underwent a clinical and instrumental evaluation. A semi-structured interview about …
