Genotype frequencies of the +874T→A single nucleotide polymorphism in the first intron of the interferon-γ gene in a sample of Sicilian patients affected by tuberculosis

In the light of the key role played by interferon (IFN)-gamma in the control of tuberculosis, in the present paper we have evaluated the distribution of the functional +874T --> A IFN-gamma single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in Sicilian patients affected by tuberculosis. Our aim was to determine whether there is an association between the TT genotype, which has been suggested to be linked to an increased production of IFN-gamma, and resistance to chronic tuberculosis. DNA samples were obtained from 45 patients and 97 healthy controls. Polymorphism at +874 was identified using amplification refractory mutational system methodology. The +874T SNP was less frequent in patients than in contro…

Caveolin-1, breast cancer and ionizing radiation

Breast cancer (BC) recovery has increased in recent years thanks to efforts of Omics-based research in this field. However, despite the important results obtained, BC remains a complex multifactorial pathology that is difficult to treat appropriately. Caveolin-1 (CAV1), the basic constituent protein of specialized plasma membrane invaginations called caveolae, is emerging as a potential therapeutic biomarker in BC. This factor may modulate BC response to chemotherapy and radiation therapy. In addition, recent reports describe the key role of CAV1 during cell response to oxidative stress. The aim of the present review was to describe the biological roles of CAV1 in BC considering its contras…

Analysis of interleukin 10 (IL-10) -1082G/A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotypes in breast cancer (BC) patients (pts) and in >95 years old cancer free women

9656 Background:the anti-inflammatory IL-10 -1082 (G/A) SNP might be associated with different risk for breast tumor development. The -1082GG homozygous genotype is associated with an higher IL-10 ...
