The purpose of the research was to describe and interpret the process of quality learning in small companies and, based on the findings, to construct and develop a model of this process. The overall model was built in two stages. At first, a theoretical model was constructed having analysed the literature on quality, total quality management (TQM), learning theories, with particular focus on the transformative learning theory by Mezirow (1981; 1995). Based on the analysis and the pre-understanding of the researcher, a processual model of quality learning in small companies (the LAO) was formed.
