Veleno: una parola che ricorre con insistenza nelle tragedie di Shakespeare. Quali motivazioni hanno spinto il drammaturgo inglese a inserire in tutte le sue opere almeno una volta il “veleno”? Il saggio indaga le ricorrenze del termine, ma si sofferma anche su un altro aspetto assai rilevante: tutti i personaggi che muoiono per soffocamento sono innocenti, mentre tutti quelli che sono uccisi (o si suicidano) col veleno sono colpevoli. Non può trattarsi di una coincidenza, bensì di una preordinata impostazione dell’impianto drammatico. Il volume così dimostra che in Shakespeare esiste un preciso ordine tripartito che regola le colpe di tutti i personaggi delle tragedie.

Il volume ha ad oggetto le variazioni che hanno caratterizzato il rapporto tra l’Uomo e la Morte nella cultura occidentale. Il percorso d’analisi viene portato avanti con un approccio diacronico in una indagine che, pur concentrandosi sull’esame testuale, di concerto, si ritaglia spazi per posare lo sguardo anche sulla produzione iconografica. T/NK “Nasal Type” Lymphomas: An Italian Cooperative Retrospective Survey.

Abstract T/NK “nasal type” lymphoma is a neoplasm that shows a peculiar geographical distribution. In fact most of the reported cases come from Far Eastern countries such as Hong Kong, and Central America, particularly from Mexico; this kind of lymphoma occurrs rarely in western countries. Between 1997 and 2004, 19 new cases of T/NK nasal type lymphoma were diagnosed in 7 Italian Hematology Division. Patients characteristics were as follows: all caucasian; 14 men and 5 women; median age 53 years (range 20–80). Abstract To evaluate clinical and biological features, treatments and outcome of patients(pts) with Systemic Mastocytosis(SM). A retrospective study (1995–2006) about pts with SM admitted in 14 Italian hematology divisions in tertiary cares or university hospitals. 30 cases of SM were collected(median age 62 y.o.; M/F 14/16) and classified according to the WHO criteria: Mast Cell Leukemia in 14 pts, Aggressive SM in 12 and Indolent in 3; the remaining one had SM with associated clonal non-mast cell-lineage hematologic disease. "Delirium Day": a nationwide point prevalence study of delirium in older hospitalized patients using an easy standardized diagnostic tool

Background To date, delirium prevalence in adult acute hospital populations has been estimated generally from pooled findings of single-center studies and/or among specific patient populations. Furthermore, the number of participants in these studies has not exceeded a few hundred. To overcome these limitations, we have determined, in a multicenter study, the prevalence of delirium over a single day among a large population of patients admitted to acute and rehabilitation hospital wards in Italy. Caspofungin for the treatment of candidaemia in patients with haematological malignancies

AbstractThis study was prospectively conducted in 11 haematology divisions over a 2-year period to evaluate the efficacy of caspofungin in 24 neutropenic patients with haematological malignancies (HM) and candidaemia. These patients had received chemotherapy for HM and were neutropenic (PNN < 0.5 × 109/L) for a median of 12 days (2–41) before candidaemia. The patients received caspofungin for a median duration of 12 days (range 6–26), obtaining a favourable overall response of 58%. At 30 days, 11 patients had died (46%); candidaemia was responsible for mortality in six patients (25%). These results suggest that treatment of candidaemia with caspofungin in neutropenic HM was efficacious, as …
