Reading The Book of Margery Kempe in the 21st Century: Gender, Authorship, and Performance

2011

The history of The Book of Margery Kempe, written at the beginning of the 15th century by a burgess of Bishop's Lynn (Norfolk), is quite revealing of the way Medieval Studies have entered the 21th century. Its links with the present have become stronger thanks to the critical approach, first of Women's Studies and then of Gender Studies (see Partner 1993; and also Bennett 1993), to the issues of authorship, sexuality and the body, and ultimately of performance Hopenwasser 1999; Bradford 2001; McAvoy 2005)

Eat or Be Eaten: Psychological and Bodily Violence in Michèle Roberts’s Reworking of Fairy-Tale Cannibalism

2014

This paper focuses on Robertsʼs counter-narrative “The Cookery Lesson” and the theme of fairy-tale cannibalism. While questioning the representation of the cannibalizing and the cannibalized bodies through the analysis of the sensuous language describing the desire-violence nexus, we shall take into account the ways in which the narrative form is affected in the passage from traditional fairy tale to contemporary short story, not only as concerns the representation of characters but also as regards the use of narrative voices and narrative strategies recalling the oral origins of fairy tales. At the same time, such formal choices critically re-contextualize source stories in a modern space-…

Shape-Shifting Tales. Michèle Roberts's Monstrous Women

2010

The book provides an analysis of the representation of women’s bodies and their monstrous metamorphoses in selected short stories by contemporary English writer Michèle Roberts. The author explores the relationship between traditional fairy tales such as the Grimm Brothers’ and Charles Perrault’s, the lives of female saints and Roberts’s counter-narratives, focussing on the analysis of images of sublimed fleshliness and of acts of monstrous violence on the body. The book takes into account relevant Women’s Studies criticism regarding the mother-daughter relationship, as Roberts’s stories question the role of mother figures in traditional fairy tales and hagiography and at the same time rewo…

L’amica geniale in Inghilterra: il caso dell’adattamento radio di Timberlake Wertenbaker

2019

This paper takes into consideration Timberlake Wertenbaker's adaptation of Ferrante's My Brilliant Friend (2016) for the radio. In particular, the focus of the paper is on the first of the four radioplays and on the dramatic strategies used and adaptation choices made by Wertenbaker. We shall focus on the use of two main adult voices (Lena and Lila), the use of the voice over, and the representation of time. The chapter also considers the image of "neapolitanity" offered in the radioplay, the reception with the British audience with respect to the meridionist idea of Southern Italy as poor and violent. I aim to show how, with some exceptions, Wertenbaker somehow manages to push beyond the c…
