In the frame of traditional medicine, the use in the treatment of psoriasis of some plants typical of the flora of Sicily is reported. A preliminary search on some plants used for the treatment of psoriasis in Asia, South America and Africa is also reported.
Volatile compounds of fresh fruits of Phillyrea latifolia L.

The volatiles constituents of fresh fruits of Phillyrea latifolia were submitted to investigation by GC-MS. The plants grows wild in different zones of the mediterranean region and its leaves and fruits are used as astringent, diuretic and anti-inflammatory. The volatiles were sampled by solid-phase microextraction (SPME), with a 100 mm polydimethylsiloxane fibre a 50 °C for 1 h. The headspace main components of fresh fruits of Phillyrea latifolia included limonene, β-cariophillene, eremophilene, α-muurolene, β -eudesmol e spatulenol.

Wild food plants of popular use in Sicily.

In the present work the authors report the result of their food ethnobotanical researches, which have been carried out in Sicily during the last thirty years. Data concerning 188 wild species used in the traditional Sicilian cuisine are reported. The authors underline those species that are partially or completely unknown for their culinary use and they illustrate other species that local inhabitants suggested in the prevention or treatment of symptomatologies caused by a refined diet, poor in vegetables. Analgesic of the past: spongia soporifera – In order to improve the knowledge of plants used in the past as analgesic and anaesthetic, the authors refer in the current contribute to results coming from a bibliographical research carried out on plants which constituted the ingredients of “spongia soporifera”, a preparation made of a see sponge together with concentrated decoctions of medical plants. The authors analyse the species used for the preparation of “spongia soporifera”, investigating them in historical, botanic, chemical, pharmacological and toxicological aspects.
