SUPERIOR MESENTERIC VEIN THROMBOSIS AND CYTOMEGAOLOVIRUS: A DIAGNOSTIC DILEMMA, A CASE REPORT AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE
Superior mesenteric vein thrombosis (SMVT) is a rare condition, usually caused by infections, intra-abdominal inflammatory diseases, portal hypertension, hypercoagulable states, or contraceptive therapy. Due to its vague symptomatology, SMVT is often diagnosed only after an abdominal contrast-enhanced computed computed tomography (CT) scan. In this article, we present a case of SMVT in a patient with a history of contraceptive drug use and a recent cytomegalovirus infection. A 36-year-old female was admitted to our department with the clinical symptoms of an acute appendicitis. the patient was a smoker and had been using hormonal contraceptive for over a year. surgery was deemed the best co…
THE ROLE OF BUTYRIC ACID AS A OPROTECTIVE AGENT AGAINST INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE
Inflammatory Bowel disease (IBD), such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, are pathologies characterized by a chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Their etiopathogenesis is not yet fully understood. Immune system and heat shock proteins (HSPs) dysfunctions are considered to be among the most likely causes of these diseases. Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid produced by intestinal microflora. It has a trophic, benefical and protective role in the colonic mucosa, and it also induces changes in Hsp levels and localization. It may therefore be a valuable complementary therapeutic agent when used alongside trraditional drugs (mesalazine and corticosteroids) to treat the …
Evaluation of the Thermodynamic Performance of the Traditional Passive Systems
The energy consumption of buildings in urban areas is one of the greatest source of energy wasting and, consequently, of increasing of CO2 emission. Research is currently focused on the reduction of this consumption through the use of passive air-conditioning systems, that can be integrated with conventional systems and give rise to the so-called hybrid systems. Historically, these passive systems were developed in the Mediterranean and Middle East area. The research approach on this topic involves the application of design strategies and the development of computational tools and control systems. The development of the hybrid systems is the result of the synergy between current scientific …
La circoncisione nella corporoplastica secondo Nesbit: tempo obbligatorio? Esperienza su 158 pazienti (Circumcision in Nesbit corporoplasty: a mandatory time? Our experience on 158 patients)
INTRODUCTION: The Nesbit procedure is the most common surgical technique to correct congenital or acquired penile curvature. It is a common opinion that this surgical procedure has to be completed with a circumcision to prevent foreskin necrosis or phimosis. According to our experience we believe that some procedural "tricks" could strongly reduce that mechanical and ischemic trauma on the foreskin responsible for these complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 1988 to 2010 we selected 158 patients treated with Nesbit's corporoplasty. The procedure was recommended to patients who presented a penile curvature wider than 30° and reporting however some difficulty or pain at coitus, or to pati…
Personality characteristics and family functioning on alcohol use in Italian adolescents.
Several psychosocial factors are associated with increase in risk of alcohol use in adolescence: personality factors and environment characteristics seem to play a key role (Nation & Heflinger, 2006). Psychological studies on possible predictors of drinking have emphasized the relationship between self-esteem, coping strategies and alcohol use, but findings are not completely coherent (Hamdan-Mansour et al., 2007; Laukkanen et al., 2001). Furthermore, studies of the family environment have shown that family functioning characteristics are related to alcohol use (Clark et al., 2011). The purpose of the present research was to examine the impact of personal and familiar variables on adole…
PROBIOTICI E TERAPIA CONVENZIONALE: NUOVE FRONTIERE NELLA GESTIONE DELLE MANIFESTAZIONI ARTICOLARI DELLE MALATTIE INFIAMMATORIE INTESTINALI (IBD)
Summary: This work reports a clinical trial performed at palermo University Hospital "paolo Giaccone". From January 2004 to December 2011, 79 patients were enrolled (40 men and 39 women). All patients suffered from Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and were subjected to orthopedic consultation at the institute of Orthopaedics, University Hospital of palermo, for arthropathy to IBD. The patients were divided into two groups (A and B) and dealt with different therapies for the resolution of the inflammatory picture of the colonic mucosa and the treatment of the extraintestinal articular manifestations. Group A was treated with drug therapy: Diclofenac (75 mg im/ day for 10 days9 and Mesalazine…
A socio-ecological perspective on alcohol use in adolescence
Alcohol use among adolescents has become a public health problem(Morawska & Oei,2005). Although the frequency and the amount of alcoholic beverages consumed vary greatly from different countries and cultures, in two thirds of the ESPAD countries the vast majority of the students (15-16 years) have drank alcohol at least once in their lifetime. Moreover, in half of the participating countries, 47% of the students had consumed at least one glass of alcohol at the age of 13 or younger, and 14% had been drunk at that age. These changing patterns of consumption are associated with a variety of negative outcomes (Coleman & Cater, 2003). In a socio-ecological perspective, many studies (Nation & He…
