Prediction of cardiovascular disease by the framingham-REGICOR equation in the high-risk PREDIMED cohort: Impact of the mediterranean diet across dif…

2017

Background-The usefulness of cardiovascular disease (CVD) predictive equations in different populations is debatable. We assessed the efficacy of the Framingham-REGICOR scale, validated for the Spanish population, to identify future CVD in participants, who were predefined as being at high-risk in the PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea (PREDIMED) study-a nutrition-intervention primary prevention trial-and the impact of adherence to the Mediterranean diet on CVD across risk categories. Methods and Results-In a post hoc analysis, we assessed the CVD predictive value of baseline estimated risk in 5966 PREDIMED participants (aged 55-74 years, 57% women; 48% with type 2 diabetes mellitus). Legume consumption is inversely associated with type 2 diabetes incidence in adults: A prospective assessment from the PREDIMED study

2018

Background & aims: Legumes, a low-energy, nutrient-dense and low glycemic index food, have shown beneficial effects on glycemic control and adiposity. As such, legumes are widely recommended in diabetic diets, even though there is little evidence that their consumption protects against type 2 diabetes. Therefore the aim of the present study was to examine the associations between consumption of total legumes and specific subtypes, and type 2 diabetes risk. We also investigated the effect of theoretically substituting legumes for other protein- or carbohydrate-rich foods. Methods: Prospective assessment of 3349 participants in the PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea (PREDIMED) study without ty…

Intercomparison of spectroradiometers and Sun photometers for the determination of the aerosol optical depth during the VELETA-2002 field campaign

2006

In July 2002 the VELETA-2002 field campaign was held in Sierra Nevada (Granada) in the south of Spain. The main objectives of this field campaign were the study of the influence of elevation and atmospheric aerosols on measured UV radiation. In the first stage of the field campaign, a common calibration and intercomparison between Licor-1800 spectroradiometers and Cimel-318 Sun photometers was performed in order to assess the quality of the measurements from the whole campaign. The intercomparison of the Licor spectroradiometers showed, for both direct and global irradiances, that when the comparisons were restricted to the visible part of the spectrum the deviations were within the instrum…

Angiogenesis biomarker study of a phase II trial of pazopanib (P) in recurrent or persistent ovarian (EOC), peritoneal (PPC), or fallopian tube cance…

2012

e15575 Background: Angiogenesis is essential to tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis in EOC. The aim of this study was to identify angiogenic biomarkers to predict response to P, a potent and selective multi-targeted receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor of VEGFR-1, VEGFR-2, VEGFR-3, PDGFR-a/β, and c-kit, in a clinical phase II trial. Methods: We analyzed a series of 20 out of 25 women enrolled in a GEICO Phase II trial that studied the Clinical Benefit Rate (CBR) of P in platinum-resistant EOC, PPC and FTC (results will be presented in an additional abstract). Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumors at diagnosis were evaluated for the microvessel density (MVD) by using CD31 immunostaining…

Feasibility of a modified outpatient regimen of intravenous/intraperitoneal chemotherapy in optimally debulked stage III ovarian cancer patients: a G…

2011

Objectives: The objective of the study was to assess the feasibility, toxicity, and reasons for early discontinuation of a modified outpatient intraperitoneal/intravenous (IP/IV) chemotherapy regimen for the treatment of patients with optimally debulked stage III ovarian cancer. Methods: Between February 2006 and November 2008, 51 consecutive patients from Institutions of the Spanish Ovarian Cancer Group (GEICO) were treated with a modified outpatient IP chemotherapy regimen. Patients received IV paclitaxel 175 mg/m2 over 3 hours on day 1, followed by IP cisplatin 100 mg/m2 (or 75 mg/m2 according to the principal investigator9s criteria) on day 2. On day 8, patients received IP paclitaxel 6…

New set of 2D/3D thermodynamic indices for proteins. A formalism based on "Molten Globule" theory

2010

Abstract We define eight new macromolecular indices, and several related descriptors for proteins. The coarse grained methodology used for its deduction ensures its fast execution and becomes a powerful potential tool to explore large databases of protein structures. The indices are intended for stability studies, predicting Φ -values, predicting folding rate constants, protein QSAR/QSPR as well as protein alignment studies. Also, these indices could be used as scoring function in protein-protein docking or 3D protein structure prediction algorithms and any others applications which need a numerical code for proteins and/or residues from 2D or 3D format.

GEICO (Spanish Group for Investigation on Ovarian Cancer) treatment guidelines in ovarian cancer 2012

2013

In 2006, under the auspices of The Spanish Research Group for Ovarian Cancer (Spanish initials GEICO), the first “Treatment Guidelines in Ovarian Cancer” were developed and then published in Clinical and Translational Oncology by Poveda Velasco et al. (Clin Transl Oncol 9(5):308–316, 2007). Almost 6 years have elapsed and over this time, we have seen some important developments in the treatment of ovarian cancer. Significant changes were also introduced after the GCIG-sponsored 4th Consensus Conference on Ovarian Cancer by Stuart et al. (Int J Gynecol Cancer 21:750–755, 2011). So we decided to update the treatment guidelines in ovarian cancer and, with this objective, a group of investigato…

Influence of CO in the structural and electrical properties of Pt nanocontacts: comparison with H2 molecule addition.

2009

Density-functional theory is used to determine the atomic structure and the zero-bias conductance of Pt nanocontacts upon CO addition. Three stable atomic configurations of the nanocontacts, in conjunction with a statistical analysis of their electrical response, are enough to explain the main features of the experimental conductance histograms. Remarkably, the role of nonlocal effects when approaching the exchange-correlation potential within density-functional theory turns out to be crucial for CO molecular-based systems. Finally, a comparison with H(2) molecule addition on Pt nanocontacts is presented.

Dietary inflammatory index and all-cause mortality in large cohorts: The SUN and PREDIMED studies

2019

[Background]: Inflammation is known to be related to the leading causes of death including cardiovascular disease, several types of cancer, obesity, type 2 diabetes, depression-suicide and other chronic diseases. In the context of whole dietary patterns, the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®) was developed to appraise the inflammatory potential of the diet. [Objective]: We prospectively assessed the association between DII scores and all-cause mortality in two large Spanish cohorts and valuated the consistency of findings across these two cohorts and results published based on other cohorts.
