Uterine effects of metformin administration in anovulatory women with polycystic ovary sindrome

Background Metformin has been shown to improve fertility in anovulatory patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), inducing not only a high ovulation and pregnancy rate but also reducing the incidence of miscarriages. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the uterine effects of metformin in patients with PCOS who ovulated under metformin. Methods Thirty-seven non-obese primary infertile anovulatory patients with PCOS and another 30 age- and body mass index-matched healthy women (control group) were studied. Abstract Necrotizing enterocolitis continues to be a devastating disease process for very low birth weight infants in Neonatal Intensive Care Units. The aetiology and pathogenesis of necrotizing enterocolitis are not definitively understood. It is known that necrotizing enterocolitis is secondary to a complex interaction of multiple factors that results in mucosal damage, which leads to intestinal ischemia and necrosis. Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs) activate genes that promote cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in a number of tumor cells. This study showed that suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA), a potent and commonly used HDACI, induced apoptosis in human colon adenocarcinoma HT-29 cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner. This effect was accompanied by the induction of oxidative stress, dissipation of mitochondrial transmembrane potential and activation of executioner caspases.
