La Direction des archives de France n’aurait plus les moyens de remplir son rôle et le rayonnement des Archives nationales se réduirait comme peau de chagrin. Bref, les archives seraient tombées dans un cercle vicieux dont par méconnaissance et désintérêt personne ne s’émeut aujourd’hui. La France, forte d’une histoire archivistique longue de deux siècles, se préparerait donc un avenir sans devenir.Sur la base de la dialectique de la mémoire et de l’oubli, l’ouvrage se divise en trois parties discutant à leur tour de la mémoire invisible, occultée et retrouvée.
