Elokuussa kokoontui Tartossa, Viron Kirjallisuuden Museossa (Eesti Kirjandusmuu- seum) järjestyksessä jo yhdestoista huumorintutkimuksen kesäkoulu, 11th International Summer School and Symposium on Humour and Laughter: Theory, Research and Applications. Tämän vuoden kesäkoulussa painottuivat erityisesti eri tieteenalojen huumoria käsitte- levä tutkimus teorioineen ja sovelluksineen. Järjestäjien mukaan kiinnostus huumoriin ja erityisesti sen tutkimusten käytännön soveltamiseen ovat lisääntyneet viime vuosina. Artikkelin näkökulma kansalaisuuteen on rahvaan lasten kansalaiseksi kasvamisessa sekä kasvatetuksi tulemisessa 1900-luvun alun Suomessa. SMS-messages - context for traditional and modern proverbs

The article focuses on SMS-messages as short letters in a Finnish daily newspaper, Salon Seudun Sanomat. A proverb is often included in the SMS-message. The analysis is based on Charles Briggs’s (1988) research on a proverb’s performances. Proverbs in a spoken language are in many ways similar to proverbs in the colloquial written form; presentational features are the same. The research is also based on Lev Vygotski’s (1967) claim that a language is linked to a thought, and on Gottlob Frege’s (2000) principle of context. Some theoretical aspects of processes behind the meanings of proverbs and phrases

This article examines the process that makes proverbial utterances meaning-carrying units. The aim is to show why proverbial utterances are used and understood in everyday speech, focusing particularly on their context-connected aspects. Context is understood as a cultural matter, as a matter of an individual experience, and as offering a frame for interpreting an utterance. The constellation of proverbs is quite permanent. Only one third of proverbs are supposed to change in about one hundred years (Kuusi 1994: 117−118). This means that the proverbs used in the 21st century are much the same as the proverbs in the beginning of the 20th century and quite the same as in 1850’s. In this article I focus on the proverb as a significant unit. Even if the proverbs are unchangeable, their meanings are not. The proverbial expressions can be looked from at least four stand points: (1) What is the proverb decoded to mean? (2) What do the words mean? (3) What does the speaker mean? Women's Place in Finnish Proverbs from Childhood

The purpose of this article is to introduce some features of the relationship between proverbs and gender in Finnish folklore tradition. I focus on pedagogical speech using proverbs in the life-stories from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The main interest is on bringing up children concentrating on the written memories and the everyday life of ordinary people. This deals with the private level of education in childhood memories.
