Search for the Xb and other hidden-beauty states in the π+π−ϒ(1S) channel at ATLAS

2015

This Letter presents a search for a hidden-beauty counterpart of the X(3872) in the mass ranges 10.05--10.31 GeV and 10.40--11.00 GeV, in the channel Xb→π+π−Υ(1S)(→μ+μ−), using 16.2 fb−1 of s√=8 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. No evidence for new narrow states is found, and upper limits are set on the product of the Xb cross section and branching fraction, relative to those of the Υ(2S), at the 95% confidence level using the CLS approach. These limits range from 0.8% to 4.0%, depending on mass. For masses above 10.1 GeV, the expected upper limits from this analysis are the most restrictive to date. Searches for production of the Υ(13DJ), Υ(10860), and Υ(110…

Measurement of exclusive γγ→ℓ+ℓ− production in proton–proton collisions at s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

2015

This Letter reports a measurement of the exclusive gamma gamma -> l(+)l(-) (l = e, mu) cross-section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, based on an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb(-1). For the electron or muon pairs satisfying exclusive selection criteria, a fit to the dilepton acoplanarity distribution is used to extract the fiducial cross-sections. The cross-section in the electron channel is determined to be sigma(excl)(gamma gamma -> e+e-) = 0.428 +/- 0.035 (stat.) +/- 0.018 (syst.) pbfor a phase-space region with invariant mass of the electron pairs greater than 24GeV, in which both electrons have transverse momentum p(T)…

Performance of the ATLAS liquid argon endcap calorimeter in the pseudorapidity region in beam tests

2008

Abstract The pseudorapidity region 2.5 | η | 4.0 in ATLAS is a particularly complex transition zone between the endcap and forward calorimeters. A set-up consisting of 1 4 resp. 1 8 of the full azimuthal acceptance of the ATLAS liquid argon endcap and forward calorimeters has been exposed to beams of electrons, pions and muons in the energy range E ⩽ 200 GeV at the CERN SPS. Data have been taken in the endcap and forward calorimeter regions as well as in the transition region. This beam test set-up corresponds very closely to the geometry and support structures in ATLAS. A detailed study of the performance in the endcap and forward calorimeter regions is described. The data are compared wit…

Hadronic calibration of the ATLAS liquid argon end-cap calorimeter in the pseudorapidity region in beam tests

2004

Abstract A full azimuthal φ -wedge of the ATLAS liquid argon end-cap calorimeter has been exposed to beams of electrons, muons and pions in the energy range 6 GeV ⩽ E ⩽ 200 GeV at the CERN SPS. The angular region studied corresponds to the ATLAS impact position around the pseudorapidity interval 1.6 | η | 1.8 . The beam test setup is described. A detailed study of the performance is given as well as the related intercalibration constants obtained. Following the ATLAS hadronic calibration proposal, a first study of the hadron calibration using a weighting ansatz is presented. The results are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo simulations, based on GEANT 3 and GEANT 4 models.

Measurement of Higgs boson production in the diphoton decay channel inppcollisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

2014

A measurement of the production processes of the recently discovered Higgs boson is performed in the two-photon final state using 4.5 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions data at root s = 7 TeV and 20.3 fb(-1) at root s = 8 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The number of observed Higgs boson decays to diphotons divided by the corresponding Standard Model prediction, called the signal strength, is found to be mu = 1.17 +/- 0.27 at the value of the Higgs boson mass measured by ATLAS, m(H) = 125.4 GeV. The analysis is optimized to measure the signal strengths for individual Higgs boson production processes at this value of m(H). They are found to be mu(ggF) = 1.32…

Measurements of spin correlation in top-antitop quark events from proton-proton collisions ats=7  TeVusing the ATLAS detector

2014

Measurements of spin correlation in top quark pair production are presented using data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC with proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb(-1). Events are selected in final states with two charged leptons and at least two jets and in final states with one charged lepton and at least four jets. Four different observables sensitive to different properties of the top quark pair production mechanism are used to extract the correlation between the top and antitop quark spins. Some of these observables are measured for the first time. The measurements are in good agreement with the Stan…

QED one-loop corrections to radiative muon decay

1994

Based upon the Fermi interaction, the differential decay rate of the radiative muon decay including one-loop radiative corrections is determined to the order ${G}_{F}^{2}{\ensuremath{\alpha}}^{2}$. Essential aspects of the calculation are exhibited. After cancellation of IR divergences, the double radiative muon decay is included. Some initial applications are considered.

Identification of the yolk receptor protein in oocytes of Nereis virens (Annelida, Polychaeta) and comparison with the locust vitellogenin receptor

1992

In oviparous animals large amounts of yolk proteins of extraovarian origin are accumulated by developing oocytes during vitellogenesis. The yolk protein precursors, the vitellogenins (VTG), are transported into the oocytes by receptor-mediated endocytosis. In oocytes of the polychaetous annelid, Nereis virens, the receptor protein for VTG was visualized by ligand blotting studies as a protein with an apparent molecular mass of 190 kDa under non-reducing conditions. Anti-Locusta VTG receptor antibodies recognize the Nereis VTG receptor protein. The Nereis VTG receptor protein binds Locusta and Schistocerca VTG; the VTG receptor proteins of both locust species bind the Nereis vitellin. These …

Long-lasting exocytosis and massive structural reorganisation in the egg periphery during cortical reaction inPlatynereis dumerilii(Annelida, Polycha…

1995

SummaryThe course of the cortical reaction in thePlatynereis dumeriliiegg is described from live observation and from sectioned fixed material and is found to differ in several aspects from the course of cortical reactions in better-known systems. Cortical granules are unusually numerous. They are discharged by exocytosis during a period of about 25 min following fertilisation (18°C). Most of the surplus membrane material brought to the egg surface by exocytosis is set free into the perivitelline space. Swelling of egg jelly precursor secreted by cortical granule exocytosis may be causal for the detachment of the vitelline envelope from the egg cell surface which, however, remains attached …

Correlation of the chemiluminescence-activity of peripheral blood monocytes with CSF parameters of inflammation and the clinical course of patients w…

2009

– The chemiluminescence-activity (CL-A) of peripheral blood monocytes (MO) was measured in eight patients with lymphocytic meningitis or meningoencephalitis and compared to CSF parameters and the clinical course. The initial maximum CL-A was around four times above the control and decreased to normal values within approximately 20 days. Poor correlations were found when the CL-A was compared to CSF parameters in the total group of patients. With regard to the CSF parameters in individual patients the CL-A was closely related to the cell count, to a lesser degree to the protein content, but not to the IgG content. Finally, a very good correlation of the CL-A was found with the clinical cours…

Performance of the ATLAS Hadronic End-Cap Calorimeter in Beam Tests

2001

Abstract Modules of the ATLAS liquid argon Hadronic End-cap Calorimeter (HEC) were exposed to beams of electrons, muons and pions in the energy range 6⩽ E ⩽200 GeV at the CERN SPS. A description of the HEC and of the beam test setup are given. Results on the energy response and resolution are presented and compared with simulations. The ATLAS energy resolution for jets in the end-cap region is inferred and meets the ATLAS requirements.

Liquid argon calorimeter performance at high rates

2012

Abstract We project the performance of the ATLAS liquid argon endcap and forward calorimeters at the planned high luminosity LHC option HL-LHC by exposing small calorimeter modules of the electromagnetic, hadronic, and forward calorimeters to high intensity beams at IHEP/Protvino. The beam intensity extends well beyond the maximum expected for these calorimeters at HL-LHC. The signal reconstruction and calorimeter performance have been studied in full detail.

2016

Measurements of the per-event charged-particle yield as a function of the charged-particle transverse momentum and rapidity are performed using p+Pbp+Pb collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt (SNN) = 5.01 TeV. Charged particles are reconstructed over pseudorapidity |η|<2.3|η|<2.3 and transverse momentum between 0.1 GeV0.1 GeV and 22 GeV22 GeV in a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1 μb−11 μb−1. The results are presented in the form of charged-particle nuclear modification factors, where the p+Pbp+Pb charged-particle multiplicities are compared between central and peripheral p+Pbp+Pb collisions as well as to charged-p…

SARS-CoV-2 vaccination modelling for safe surgery to save lives: data from an international prospective cohort study

2021

Abstract Background Preoperative SARS-CoV-2 vaccination could support safer elective surgery. Vaccine numbers are limited so this study aimed to inform their prioritization by modelling. Methods The primary outcome was the number needed to vaccinate (NNV) to prevent one COVID-19-related death in 1 year. NNVs were based on postoperative SARS-CoV-2 rates and mortality in an international cohort study (surgical patients), and community SARS-CoV-2 incidence and case fatality data (general population). NNV estimates were stratified by age (18–49, 50–69, 70 or more years) and type of surgery. Best- and worst-case scenarios were used to describe uncertainty. Results NNVs were more favourable in su…
