Acoustic characterization of the ancient theatre at Syracuse

The ancient theatre at Syracuse, the largest open air theatre in Sicily, experienced many structural changes along its history. Today its very renowned drama festival attracts visitors from all the world that fill the entire cavea: customized seats accomodation and a prominent stage play an important role in the theatre acoustics. Because no data were available in literature on its acoustical perfomance a measurement session was carried out by our team in the framework of a wide research project on ancient theatres acoustics in the modern use. New Acoustic Test Chambers at the University of Palermo

Acoustic test chambers at the University of Palermo have been completed after a design optimization of existent building structures. A unique building houses five reverberation chambers, differently coupled each other in order to achieve a large flexibility on testing procedures, and offices for the staff. Main measurements offered to national and international standards include determination of sound power, sound insulation and sound absorption. Digital signal processing applied to noisy acoustic data.

Frequently we deal with analog data from noisy acoustic measurements which need a preprocessing prior to the extraction of the information embedded. Data deterioration may be due to several reasons, for example: data recording on obsolete and technological poor support; bad signal conditioning (poor signal-to-noise ratio, non linearity and/or timevariance of the system under test). Sometimes information to be extracted from data is not conventional so it needs a dedicated processing. In this paper a novel audio data processing method from the autors experience in ancient open-air theatres research is shown.

Sono stati trattati due differenti argomenti: lo studio della diffusione delle onde acustiche per mezzo dei diffusori di Schroeder e la modellazione acustica tramite la Digital Waveguide Mesh (DWM). E’ stato prima affrontato lo studio delle sequenze numeriche a spettro costante e il modo in cui esse vengono generate. La progettazione dei diffusori è stata studiata, partendo da una formulazione semplificata in campo lontano e variando i parametri di progetto sono stati ricavati i diagrammi polari di diffusione.
