The article examines Diderot’s theory of language, focusing the approach between poetry and painting looked upon as conventional signs, mainly in the following works: Lettre sur les sourds et muets , Lettre sur les aveugles , Salon de 1767, Traite du Beau and De la poesie dramatique . The aim is to show that poetry’s specificity doesn’t go against the inclusion of pictorial elements such as the so-called poetic hieroglyphs. On the other hand, painting, although not a sequential language like poetry, includes a kind of narrative.
