Catalan fiction in the 15th century is framed within the context of the expansion of the Crown of Aragon around the Mediterranean, the emergence of Valencia as the cultural capital of the Crown, the crisis in the prevailing mediaeval values, the consolidation of a monetary economy, and fertile contacts between Catalan culture and Castile, France, Burgundy and especially Italy. Review and contextualisation of biographical, bibliographical, linguistic and ideological facets of Martí de Viciana el Vell (the elder) and his grandson Rafael Martí de Viciana (with special attention to linguistic attitude). By contrasting them, it serves to throw into relief the great cultural and sociolinguistic mutation in the heart of the classes dominating the kingdom of Valencia at the end of the 15th century and beginning of the 16th, caused by important political and social changes.

The text of the three Catalan editions of «Història de les amors de París i Viana», published in Barcelona and Girona in the last decade of the fifteenth century, shows a linguistic orientation towards Castilian and Italian onomastics. It has led to postulate two hypotheses on its textual dependence: a Castilian origin and an Italian origin. A revision of the text as translation and adaptation for the printing allows to ascertain the confluence of two linguistic layers: one, of the first half of the fifteenth century, which explains the persistence of archaic features and the Italian onomastics, and another, contemporary with the edition, which accounts for the Castilian orientation of the …
