Development towards a more sustainable energy system is today a priority for most governments around the world. In this paper we analyze one of the four dimensions of the energy sector in Romania. Based on but not limited to the four Energy Indicators for Sustainable Development regarding the social dimension published by the IAEA in 2005 and using data published by the Romanian National Institute of Statistics we aimed to reflect the need for (safe) access to basic energy services in the form of commercial energy at affordable rates and put it into a larger political and policy perspective of the present situation in Romania.
