Asymptomatic carotid lesions and aging: role of hypertension and other traditional and emerging risk factors

ASYMPTOMATIC CAROTID LESIONS AND AGING: ROLE OF HYPERTENSION AND OTHER TRADITIONAL AND EMERGING RISK FACTORS BACKGROUND: We evaluated the prevalence of intima-media thickening (IMT) and asymptomatic carotid plaque (ACP) in a group of subjects with or without traditional and/or emerging risk factors (RF). METHODS: There were 631 subjects (313 male and 318 female) aged between 19 and 97 years, asymptomatic for cerebro- and cardiovascular diseases. The following measurements were used: anamnesis, physical examination, height and sitting blood pressure. Biochemistry variables were also considered: total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, triglycerides, fibrinogen, high sensitive C-reactive protein, IgG…

Liver disease severity and low bone mineral density in HIV mono-infected and HIV/HCV co-infected patients

Background: In this study we assess: prevalence of osteopenia, osteoporosis and reduced bone mineral density in HIV infection and HIV / HCV co-infection;risk factors associated with reduced bone mineral density(BMD); relationship between bone mineral density and reduced liver fibrosis (FE) measured as "liver stiffness" (LS), by FibroScan ® in patients co-infected with HIV / HCV; relationship between reduced bone mineral density and cardiovascular risk assessed with the 10-year Framingham risk score (FRS) in HIV / HCV co-infected Patients And Methods: One hundred and ninety-four HIV-infected subjects (121 males =62% and 73 females = 38 %): 129 HIV-infected ( 66.5 % ) and 65 HIV / HCV co-infe…

Sequential and combined treatment of prolidase deficiency leg ulcers

Background The Authors report a case of chronic cutaneous lesions in a patient affected by prolidase deficiency, a rare disorder inherited through an autosomal recessive gene (50 cases reported ). The enzyme prolidase is widely distributed throughout the body and it is important in the recycling of proline and hydroxyproline. Among the clinical presentations, the most striking manifestation is the skin fragility with leg ulceration (see Table Table11) Table 1 Clinical signs of prolidase deficiency The deficiency of the enzyme prolidase is responsible for massive loss of proline in the urine which is estimated to be as high as 3 g/die. The diagnosis is ascertained by iminopeptiduria greater…
