This paper explores Husserl’s late manuscripts in order to sketch a phenomenological description of drives and the dimension of passive constitution that belongs to them. Although this topic touches upon psychological issues, it will be shown that a specifically phenomenological approach allows us to recognize the transcendental significance of instincts. Summary A phenomenological approach to anthropology should not propose a static definition of man, but inquire into specific human motivations, which never occur isolated. Therefore, the autonomy-dependency connection is presented as a possible human motivational ground. The notion of autonomy, presented with reference to the Kantian idea of the self-determining reason and to the Husserlian account of self-constitution, reveals in itself elements of dependency. This text outlines a phenomenology of social precariousness, showing how it impacts the experiential, temporal, perceptual and self-perceptual structures of the subject, thereby influencing intergenerational relations.

Solche Fragen sind nicht selten durch einen eindringlichen emotionalen Ton geprägt und vermitteln zumeist mehr als nur ein Bedürfnis nach schlichten Informationen. Doch wir leben nicht nur in dieser objektivierten, gemessenen, konventionellen Zeit. Die philosophische und existentielle Reflexion stellt eine erlebte, subjektive Zeit heraus, die für uns lebenswichtig ist. Diese innere Zeitlichkeit und die interpersonelle Resonanz, die damit einhergeht, sind durch das heutige prekäre Leben bedroht. Damit ist jedoch das Fundament unseres Subjekt-Seins in Gefahr.

This paper discusses the criticism of naturalism based on the irreducibility of first-person-perspective facts. This critique considers naturalism insufficient since it proposes the view of reality as a centerless dimension. However, simply reintegrating subjective facts into a naturalistic view of reality we eventually produce a split situation in which conscious and self-conscious forms of life require a special consideration, thus appearing as separated from the whole of reality. Despite their undeniable connection to the body and its physiological processes, the phenomenological account of drives differentiates them from both instinctual behaviour and merely biological forces. They design a characteristic dimension of the personal grasp of the world, necessary for our meaningful orientation in all given situations. This paper analyses Dilthey’s unpublished lecture from 1890. In the anthropological and ethical reflections, a pre-predicative form of expression is pointed out as a dynamic fundament of inner life. In the second part of the lecture, expression as this inner dynamic of life is further connected with Dilthey’s “forming ethics”, i.e. with an approach that takes the inner interplay of high- and low-level processes of consciousness as the essential basis of an integrated and solidary social life. In the context of such a social ethics, expression plays a fundamental role thus gaining a broader meaning for a philosophy of life also concerned with ethical issues.
