International audience; L'article porte sur les non-publics, ces personnes en situation à l'instant t de non-pratique culturelle, de non-contact avec un objet culturel précis. A travers une étude de cas (la réception d'une pièce de théâtre participatif par un groupe de migrants), il montre comment des dispositifs institutionnels de médiation produisent, dans des contextes précis, la distance à la culture que les institutions en charge des politiques culturelles tentent d'abolir.

Le non-public et la culture. Une étude de cas en banlieue

Photographic exhibitions are organized since 2004 on the banks of the river Marne at Fleury-la-Rivière within the context of an annual event --the Festival de l'Oh!, initiated by the conseil général of the Val-de-Marne. This type of exhibition does not succeed in attracting the "non-public". The representations held by the people concerned can block their interaction with the works presented on such a public space. This study is part of an on-going general study of the non-public and its relation to culture. This is a qualitative study carried out in various "stops" of the Festival de l'Oh! The paper is only concerned with immigrants met in housing estates in the upper districts of Fleury.

Photographic exhibitions are organized today "outdoor"; I study the "non-public" (Ancel & Pessin, 2004): the absents. What are the factors hindering the encounter with the works despite their urban exposure? The article attempts to study the performances of culture that are forged by the respondents (migrants from the lower classes) during outings organized by community centers or municipal associations. To understand why photographic exhibitions fail to mobilize some, I observe in fact that the last prefer other cultural events. "Mais... je ne visite pas!". Une approche ethnographique de l'usage faible des œuvres

Some photographic exhibitions are nowadays set outdoors in order to popularize art. Through a case study, this article examines the "weak use of images" as it is practised in public places, by passers-by who do not identify art pieces as such, and do not consider themselves as visitors. Their relation to art pieces, in this context, is built on an apparent paradox (they relate and at the same time do not relate to the pieces), and constitutes the minor mode of situations and observed interactions (this relation does not organise or structure the latter).

L'exposition photographique en extérieur ou la fabrique du non-public

International audience; Depuis une dizaine d'années, des expositions photographiques sont présentées en extérieur. Les organisateurs (institutions, collectivités) espèrent ainsi renouveler les publics et participer à la démocratisation de la culture. Or, dans ses formes actuelles, ce nouveau mode d'exposition contribue plutôt à reproduire la distance culturelle et à fabriquer du non-public. La mise à distance de ces catégories coupées des œuvres, car ne fréquentant pas les équipements consacrés, passe par le choix des lieux et des thématiques d'exposition.
