There has been done a lot of research within the field, and Stein and her colleagues (2000) have developed a theoretical framework to help analyze and implement mathematical tasks according to their cognitive demand. This framework is called the Mathematical Tasks Framework (MTF) and it describes four different levels of cognitive demand.
