Carbonate groundwater systems hosted in coastal areas are of particular concern, for multi-fold reasons. First, in Sicily - as in many other islands – coastal areas are the most densely populated: this increase of anthropogenic pressure considerably raises the potential risks of groundwater contamination. This is even more dangerous considering the fact that groundwater is often the main source of potable water for coastal communities, especially since rivers and ponds near the shore are brackish. Evidence of Middle and Upper Pleistocene shorelines in the area between Capo Mongerbino (Bagheria) and Piano Sperone (Altavilla Milicia), NC Sicily
In the coastal tract between Capo Mongerbino (Bagheria) and Piano Sperone (Altavilla Milicia), some forms (caves, terraces, erosional surfaces) of marine origin and of remarkable morpho-tectonic importance have been located. The caves lie at different altitudes ranging from about 200 m a. s. l. (Grotta Mazzamuto) to 7 m a. s. l. (Cala dell’Osta); the terraced areas, comprised between 0 and 200 m a. s. l., are arranged in five orders. In Sicily, the coexistence of both glacial-eustatic cycles and a slow uplift, caused by the Pleistocenic tectonics, resulted into the sea showing itself under different forms at different altitudes, presumably dating back to Middle Pleistocene. Many engineering and environmental projects require geophysical exploration to minimize the geological risk connected with the presence of natural or artificial tunnels and cavities (air and/or water filled). In this paper we like to confirm the reliability of combined geophysical methodologies (GPR and ERT) and relative modelling to detect and locate cavities in a particular site (Marsala Western Sicily) where underground dug structures exist. These structures may be used as real artificial physical models, very useful for testing geophysical methodologies.
