Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs), Their Genetic Variants and miRNA in Mitral Valve Diseases: Potential Biomarker Tools and Targets for Personalized Treatments
Mitral valve diseases (MVD)s, comprising congenital and acquired forms, are characterized by a diverse etiology, pathophysiology, prevalence, and incidence. In industrialized countries, the acquired forms represent 2.5% of all cardiovascular diseases, with a marked augmentation after the age of 65 years. In addition, all forms of MVDs (i.e., degenerative forms) have a difficult clinical management. The major challenge is 'the early diagnosis', and echocardiographic analysis has been shown inappropriate for diagnosing MVD in moderate forms. Thus, there is a strong need to identify more appropriate biomarker tools to diagnose MVDs at early clinical stage before complications occur and worsen …
Notch 1 pathway and EPCs in bicuspid aortic valve: is their interplay involved in the ascending aortic aneurysm onset?
Backgroud_AIM: Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is frequently associated with development of ascending aortic aneurysm, even if the underlying mechanisms remain to be clarified. Here, we investigated if a deregulation of Notch1 signaling pathway and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) number is associated with BAV disease and an early ascending aortic aneurysm (AAA) onset. Methods: To this aim,70 subjects with BAV (M/F 50/20; mean age: 58.8±14.8 years) and 70 subjects with tricuspid aortic valve (TAV)(M/F 35/35; mean age: 69.1±12.8 years), AAA complicated or not, were enrolled. Multiparametric flow cytometry analyses, plasma amount assessments, gene expressions, and tissue protein semiquantitati…
Analysis of Klotho 1 gene variants in not melanocytic skin cancer
Aim of the study: The incidence of the vast majority of cancers, including melanoma and not melanocytic skin cancer (NMSC) increases with advancing age. However, the mechanism by which aging influences the risk of developing cancer is not fully understood. Whether this is attributable to declines in immunity or other changes, such as changes in the aging microenvironment, remains unclear. Amongst the many proteins implicated in aging is the protein Klotho. Loss of Klotho function results in the early appearance of several pathologies associated with human aging, downregulation of Klotho was found in several cancers, such as pancreatic cancer, HCC, and other tumors. Downregulation of Klotho …
Analysis of the traditional approaches for astronauts’ personal hygiene in outer space
Various approaches adopted in the years for astronauts' personal hygiene in microgravity conditions are revisited and analysed in this paper. For each approach, benefits, critical aspects of sanitation and comfort, along with the possibility of recycling the amount of used water, are discussed and evaluated.
ORAL MICROBIOTA: CHARACTERISTICS, RELATED PATHOLOGIES AND FUTURE PROSPECTS
The oral microbiota is represented by the set of bacteria and microrganisms that reside in the oral cavity. It is formed from bird and stabilizes during the period of permanent dentition. The oral microbiota poresents from 500 to 700 bacterial species, belonging to six main phyla, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Spirochaetes and Fusobacteria. These bacteria partecipate in the formation of dental plaque, a sort of biofilm that deposits on the rigid surfaces of the oral cavity, and contributes to the healthy maintenance of the oral cavity. An alteration of the oral microbiota contributes to the pathogenesis of periodontitis, caries, gingivitis and also of systemic d…
