EFFECT OF miR-21, miR-182 AND let-7i ON TSP-1 EXPRESSION IN COLON CANCER CELL LINE

2010

Background: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that regulate the expression of different genes, including genes involved in cancer progression, angiogenesis and metastasis. Thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) has been shown to contrast angiogenesis in vivo. TSP-1 expression levels are inversely correlated with tumor vascularity and metastasis in colon cancer. Bio-informatic statistical analysis indicated that TSP-1 is hypothetical target of miR-21, miR-182, overexpressed in CRC, and let-7i which expression is down-regulated in this tumor. In this work we investigated whether TSP-1 expression could be regulated by miR-21, mir-182 and let-7i in HT29 colon cancer cell line. Methods: To investig…

Detection and genotyping of Giardia duodenalis in oreto river (Sicily, south Italy)

2008

The aim of this study was to identify whether the origin of Oreto river Giardia contamination was derived from one of the influents, which flows near Monreale city and receives its treated wastewater, or from livestock living in farms along the river. Genotypes were characterized by DNA sequencing analysis of PCR products of TPI gene. 17 water samples coming from Oreto basin, 20 fecal animal samples and 7 human fecal samples from 3 patients with giardiasis were processed. Cysts were typed as assemblage A (n=11), B (n=2) and A+B (n=4) in water samples, as assemblage A (n=4) and B (n=2) in human samples, while in livestock was found only assemblage E. Subtype AII was prevalent in both water a…

Knowledge, attitude, and practice of the use of ready-to-eat vegetables among potential consumers of Palermo (Italy).

2007

The knowledge, attitude, and practice toward the use of ready-to-eat vegetables were evaluated in a sample of 701 (388 women and 313 men) potential consumers in Palermo, by answering to an anonymous questionnaire handed out. Food safety perceptions and behaviors were analysed; in general, interviewed consumers who perceived higher risks exhibited safer food behaviors. There weren't considerable differences in the use of these salads between two sexes; 81.4% of respondents uses these products to save a lot of time, particularly the graduates attach importance to saving in time (p = 0.001), and only 34.4% is worrying about high price. Statistical analysis showed a significant correlation betw…

Feedback linearization control of wind turbine equipped with doubly fed induction generator

2017

This paper focuses on several control techniques of a wind turbine of rated power of about 1 MW. In particular, a wind generator equipped with an asynchronous doubly-fed induction machine has been considered and its dynamic model in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment has been implemented. Starting from this model the feedback linearization control has been derived, and several simulations have been carried out, with the aim of compare its dynamic performances with the classical field oriented control, and with the V/f control. The results allow us to conclude that a DFIG controlled by a feedback linearization technique ensures better dynamic performance.

Comparison between thrombotic risk scores in essential thrombocythemia and survival implications.

2019

The conventional thrombotic risk stratification in essential thrombocythemia (ET) distinguishes patients in two risk groups based on previous thrombosis and age (< or >60). The IPSET-thrombosis takes into account four risk factors: age greater than 60 years and the presence of CV risk factors, thrombosis history and JAK2 V617F presence. The revised IPSET-thrombosis uses three adverse variables to delineate four risk categories: age greater than 60, thrombosis history, and JAK2 V617F presence. We compared different risk models in the estimation of thrombotic risk in 191 patients with ET and the role of specific driver mutations affecting overall survival, according to thrombotic risk. …

CALR MUTATIONS IN SICILIAN ESSENTIAL THROMBOCYTHEMIA AND MYELOFIBROSIS PATIENTS.

2016

Background. Essential thrombocythemia (ET) and primary myelofibrosis (MF) are myeloproliferative neoplasms characterized by the overproduction of mature cells such as platelets (ET) or early bone marrow fibrosis due to scarring induced by highly proliferating myeloid progenitors and pathological stimulation of local fibroblasts (MF). Somatic mutations in CALR gene have recently identified in the majority of JAK2-V617F and MPL negative ET and MF patients. In this study we evaluated the frequency and type of CALR mutations and their clinical and hematological features. Methods. A total of 54 patients, 29 ET and 25 MF patient, was included in this study. All patients were JAK2 V617F and MPL ne…

A non common BRAF mutation c1799-1801 delTGA identified in sporadic colon rectal cancer of sicilian patients

2010

Anthracycline has been shown to induce heart failure. To monitor this toxic damage, echocardiographic parameters of left ventricular (LV) systolic function are usually used. Aim of this study was to evaluate in lymphoma’s patients the reliability of echocardiographic data in comparison with a LV systo-diastolic parameter function: the Tei index.

Molecular characterization of Giardia duodenalis cysts in the Oreto river (Sicily, Southern Italy)

2012

<p><strong>Background</strong>: The presence of Giardia was investigated along the Oreto river between January 2008 and May 2009 with the aim of understanding the source of contamination by molecular typing of cysts.</p><p><strong>Methods</strong>: A total of 38 water samples (10 collected from the river mouth, 24 from the whole Oreto basin and 4 sewage samples from the Monreale treatment plant) were processed. In addition, 22 faecal samples of livestock living close to the Oreto area, were analyzed. The presence of Giardia was determined by immunofluorescence assay and their genetic characterization was achieved by a nested PCR assay targeting the …

A study on occupational exposure of Sicilian farmers to Giardia and Cryptosporidium

2013

Introduction. A cross-sectional study was undertaken to deter- mine the prevalence of Giardia and Cryptosporidium in calves of Palermo area (Sicily) and to evaluate the occupational risk associated with occurrence of zoonotic genotypes. Methods. A total of 217 faecal samples, from 149 calves (between 2 and 240 days of age) and 68 farmers, were collected in 19 cattle- farms of Palermo area. A questionnaire regarding demographic characteristics and personal hygienic measures was submitted to all farmers. All faecal samples were analyzed by Immunoflu- orescence assay and Polimerase Chain Reaction (PCR); geno- types were determined by DNA sequencing of Triose Phosphate Isomerase gene for Giardi…
