MESENCHIMAL STEM CELLS IN INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASES: CLINICAL EVIDENCES AND POTENTIAL INSIGHTS FOR THE CLINICIANS
Mesenchimal stem cells (MSCs) have been used experimentally and clinically in the treatment of a wide variety of pathologies MSCs can be safely transplanted in autologous and allogenic ways as they are non-immunogenic, and consequently represent a therapeutic option for refractory connective tissue diseases, fibrosing diseases like scleroderma and fistulizing colitis like in Crohn's disease (CD). The immunomodulatory properties of MSCs have already shown promise when used as therapy for otherwise medically refractory CD. Accumulating evidence suggests that the properties may also be exploited of several other conditions. The currently available experimental and clinical data indicate that, …
COLORECTAL CANCER IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS: PRELIMINARY RESULTS FROM AN ONGOING CASE-CONTROL STUDY
Background and Aim:Understanding the risk factors for colorectal cancer (CRC) is crucial to the development of effective strategies for its prevention. meta-analysis and epidemiological studies have already shown that type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with an increased risk of CRC and have provided data to support a positive relationship between these diseases. Material and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 741 consecutive caucasian patients with type 2 DM who underewnt colonoscopic screening cof CRC and followed in our tertiary referrral center in 200-208 for incidence of CRC. Patients were stratified based on gender, age, body mass index (MBI), alchool and NSAIDS assumption,…
CD1a down-regulation in primary invasive ductal breast carcinoma may predict regional lymph node invasion and patient outcome
Aims: CD1a is a molecule belonging to the highlyconserved group of CD1 proteins. Its expression indendritic cells is related to the presentation of tumour-derived glycolipid antigens to T cells and, consequently, the development of a successful antitumour response. The aim was to investigate the presence of CD1a+ cellsin both primary tumours and lymph nodes (LN) ofa series of 35 invasive ductal carcinomas by bothimmunohistochemistry and reverse transcription-poly-merase chain reaction. Methods and results: CD1a antigen was more expressedin N0 than N1 breast cancer (P < 0.0001) in bothprimary lesions and LN metastases and correlatedpositively and significantly with oestrogen (ER) (P =0.0025) and…
Association between single nucleotide polymorphysms (SNPs) of IL-6, TNF-alpha and VEGF-A genes and susceptibility to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)
ADVANCED ENDOSCOPIC IMAGING FOR SURVEILLANCE FOR DYSPLASIA AND COLORECTAL CANCER IN INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE: COULD THE PATHOLOGIST BE FURTHER HELPED?
Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have an increased risk of developing intestinal cancer. The magnitude of that increased risk as well as how best to mitigate it remain a topic of ongoing investigation in the field. It is important to quantify the risk of colorectal cancer in association with IBD. The reported risk varies widely between studies. This is partly due to the different methodologies used in the studies. Because of the limitations of surveillance strategies based on the detection of dysplasia, advanced endoscopic imaging and techniques involving the detection of alterations in mucosal antigens and genetic abnormalities are being investigated. Development of new bioma…
Atrial natriuretic peptide and CD34 overexpression in human idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathies.
Idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDCM) is a primary myocardial disease of unknown cause characterized by ventricular chamber enlargement with impaired contractile function. In familial forms of IDCM, mutations of genes coding for cytoskeletal proteins related to force transmission, such as dystrophin, cardiac actin, desmin, and delta-sarcoglycan, have been identified. Here, we report the data of a retrospective investigation carried out to evaluate the expression of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), CD34, troponin T and nestin in the myocardium of patients affected with IDCM. Formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded consecutive tissue sections from the ventricular wall of 10 human normal hear…
Cavernous haemangioma of the external auditory canal: clinical case and review of the literature
Although benign vascular lesions are frequent in the head and the neck region, clinical evidence of cavernous haemangioma of the external auditory canal is extremely rare; when present, the lesion invades the middle ear space. Herein, a rare case of a soft mass filling the external auditory canal, not involving the tympanic membrane, in a symptomatic 59-year-old male is described. Clinical and audiological characteristics, imaging studies and surgical treatment with histological evaluation are reported, which led to a diagnosis of a cavernous haemangioma. This is only the seventh case described in the literature, to date, not involving the tympanic membrane and the middle ear space. In addi…

Variable Number of Tandem Repeats (VNTR) gene polymorphism of CYP2E1 in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma
Context: The genetic polymorphism is considered a major source of variability, influencing the levels of gene expression. Cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) is a mixed-function oxidase involved in the metabolism of the many endogenous and exogenous substances (ethanol, chemical carcinogens) in the hepatic and pancreatic tissue. CYP2E1 gene polymorphisms can cause various abilities of metabolize xenobiotic substances within a population with consequent increased susceptibility to various diseases, including cancer. One of the polymorphisms of the CYP2E1 gene is a VNTR (Variable Number Tandem Repeat) of some sequences in its "5 '- flanking region. Method : VNTR genotype CYP2E1 was determined by RFLP…
