Magnetic resonance findings in scuba diving-related spinal cord decompression sickness

1997

Scuba diving is associated with risk of severe decompression sickness (DCS type II), which results from rapid reduction of the environmental pressure sufficient to cause the formation into tissue or blood of inert gas bubbles previously loaded within tissues as a soluble phase. DCS type II constitutes a unique subset of ischemic insults to the central nervous system (CNS) with primarily involvement of the spinal cord. Ten patients with diving-related barotrauma underwent neurologic examination. Two of them presented progressive sensory and motor loss in the extremities at admission and were presumed affected by spinal cord DCS. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated abnormalities in …

The Role of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Central Hearing Deficits: Beyond the Acoustic Schwannoma

1997

Acoustic schwannoma is assumed to be the most common cause of sensory-neural hearing loss (SNHL), and many papers have described the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of cerebello-pontine angle (CPA) tumours, particularly schwannoma. We retrospectively examined 72 patients complaining of different clinical syndromes and SNHL or different kinds of acoustic impairment who underwent MRI brain study excluding the presence of acoustic schwannoma and other CPA masses. In conclusion, although acoustic schwannoma is the most common cause of acquired HD, a lesion involving the neural centers of the acoustic pathway can also determine SNHL or HD. Considering the high sensitiv…

Valutazione comparativa delle sequenze fast Spin-echo e Spin-echo T2-dipendenti nella dimostrazione delle lesioni demielinizzanti encefaliche in cors…

1997

We compared T2-weighted fast spin-echo (FSE) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and conventional spin-echo (CSE) T2-weighted imaging in the detection of brain lesions of multiple sclerosis (MS). 20 patients with clinically definite MS underwent brain imaging with both FSE and CSE T2-weighted imaging. There was no significant difference in total number of lesions detected on FSE vs CSE (1354 vs 1378). Slightly more periventricular and subcortical lesions were detected using CSE than FSE, whereas more posterior cranial fossa lesions were detected by FSE. There was no statistically significant difference in the signal intensity (SI) ratio of MS lesions to that of surrounding normal white matter …

Isolated dissection of the superior mesenteric artery: a case report and literature review

2014

Isolated dissection of the superior mesenteric artery is rare; it is predominantly observed in men with the highest incidence in those over 40 years old. Contrast-enhanced multi-detector computed tomography is considered essential for the diagnosis, therapeutic management and follow-up. The therapeutic approach ranges from conservative medical treatment to surgery or endovascular stent placement, but there are, to date, no approved guidelines. We report the case of a 68-year old man who entered our Emergency Department just for mild abdominal pain, which later proved to be due to acute dissection of the superior mesenteric artery.

Ventrolateral Compression of the Brain Stem in Essential Hypertension: MR Angiography Study

1997

Our purpose was to evaluate neurovascular compression at the level of ventrolateral medulla and NVC with the IXth and the Xth cranial nerves in patients with essential hypertension and in healthy volunteers using high resoluted Spoiled Recalled Gradient Echo (SPGR) sequences, allowing the detection of stationary tissues and moving spins. Thirty patients (19 men and 11 women) with essential hypertension were examined. Patient's ages ranged from 24 to 64 years-old (mean age was 48 y.o.). Patients older than 65 were excluded. The average of systolic blood-pressure of hypertensive patients was 183 ± 10 mmHg, while the diastolic pressure was 98 ± 10.5 mmHg. In conclusion, we consider axial sing…

Portal vein thrombosis and Budd-Chiari syndrome as onset of polycythemia vera

2013

Budd-Chiari syndrome may be defined as a heterogeneous group of vascular disorders characterized by obstruction of hepatic venous return to the level of hepatic venules, supra-hepatic veins, inferior vena cava or right atrium. The main cause of this syndrome is represented by myeloproliferative diseases and, in particular, by polycythemia vera. The latter may cause multiple splanchnic thrombosis, including portal vein thrombosis, particularly important for its clinical outcomes (ascites, collateral vessels genesis, etc.). We report 2 cases of a Budd-Chiari syndrome induced by polycythemia vera characterized by an abnormal clinical onset, both as regards subjects’ age (29 and 39 years old, r…

Numerical analysis and experimental comparison on CFRP reinforced masonry walls subjected to transverse loads

2009

The out-of-plane behaviour of walls, unreinforced and reinforced by using CFRP strips, is studied by means of experimental investigation and numerical modelling. The FEM model is based on a linear constitutive law both for the ashlars and the mortar joints constituting the masonry and the lines of potential delamination are taken into account by means of an interface element with bi-linear law, reproducing the opening failure mode. When the reinforcement is introduced, an interface element with bi-linear law is also used, reproducing the sliding failure mode. Comparison between the numerical and experimental results shows the reliability of the modelling. Moreover, a parametric analysis is …
