Antiguan Creole: Genesis and Variation

This thesis investigates Antiguan Creole (AC), including its socio-history and sociolinguistics. Besides, it is concerned with the central strands of research in creolistics: the diachronic that focuses on creole genesis and creole development, and the synchronic that emphasizes the status of creoles as linguistic systems in their own right. The research has been organized in three parts. The first part is preparatory and concerns theoretical and methodological issues. It begins with a review of the literature concerning creole genesis and the creole continuum and examines the hypotheses to be tested.
