Influence of sample pan on the thermal behaviour of KSCN measured with TG

Abstract In this study, the influence of the sample pan on the thermal behaviour of potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) was investigated. The measurements were performed with thermogravimetry (TG) and the two sample pans used were a platinum pan and a ceramic crucible. The samples were heated to 400–950 °C and the thermal products were identified by powder diffraction. The thermal behaviour of KSCN was found to be dependent on the sample pan used. With the platinum sample pan KSCN reacted in the first step into a mixture of K 2 SO 4 and potassium tetracyanoplatinate (K 2 Pt(CN) 4 ). Use of kinetic DTA and TG methods for compatibility tests on 2,4,6--trinitrotoluene

We have investigated the suitability of thermoanalytical methods for compatibility tests on explosives and contact materials. DTA and TG curves of various materials were evaluated using two DTA and four TG methods and one DSC method. TNT was used as model substance. The contact materials were paraffin, polyethylene, an epoxy resin paint and an epoxy glue. In earlier tests the first two were found compatible and the latter two incompatible with TNT. None of the methods provides an absolute value for the activation energy. However, in compatibility tests only the relative change in the activation energy is of interest and, for this, three of the methods proved informative.

Abstract The solid state phase transition path of ammonium nitrate is influenced by the manner of crystallization. Slow crystallization from water gives ideal crystals, which behaved differently from crystals prepared by rapid crystallization from the melt.

Differential scanning calorimetric and Raman studies of phase transition V ⇌ IV of ammonium nitrate

Abstract Differential scanning calorimetry, alone and in conjunction with Raman spectrophotometry for simultaneous calorimetric and spectral measurements, was used to study the solid state phase transitions of ammonium nitrate between − 50 and 100 °C. On heating, two transition paths were observed between − 40 and 0 °C: one showing two separate peaks in DSC and the other showing a single peak. The latter path became dominant when samples were thermally cycled. The double transition was followed by transition IV →II at 51 °C and the single transition by transitions IV → III → II at about 50 and 87 °C.
